advice on spare tire holder w/5 gal jerry can

I am in the process of making a spare tire holder with a 5 gal jerry can next to it.

I plan to mount it to the driver side rear bumper and have it swing out to clear the tailgate when it is lowered. I put a 5 gal jerry can next to it so when it swings out it's about 3 feet long.

I feel that this is kinda long so I have two ideas.

Should I put a hinge on it so that the jerry can can swing behind the tire when it is open all the way. The main concern there is that the holder needs to swing real wide so that the tail gate can be opened b/c of the added width of the jerry can.

Or should I make a seperate holder for the jerry can and make them barn door style. Then I could put on the jerry can when needed and remove it when it's not being used.

here is some pics of the holder and the bumper mount.

I have to reinforce the upper mounting tab to support the weight. Will probably replace the flat piece w/angle iron.

The tire holder was a junkyard find, before I started welding so I am modifying it. I could have probably done a better job if I made it from scratch, but oh well...

I have yet to make a latch, but I have some ideas. Right now I need to get some beefier tranny mounts made, so this project is back burner.
