Well, my mom has a 2002 Impreza 2.5RS

I love driving it, but....you can still tell its Subaru. lol

I'd rather have my old school EA82's!

Currently I have a very messed up 1991 Loyale, but very soon I shall have a GL10....should be getting a new engine for it this week...

I've only put 15,000 on my sedan so far, but other than a pretty crazy ride to Atlanta and back (overheating, engine sounding like fireworks cuz the timing was at 28 deg) it's been very reliable. Even the 5 or 6 massive overheats the day i took the trip to Georgia didn't kill the headgaskets. 210,000 miles.

Regardless, it got headgaskets. But I love the thing to death and it loves me so... all is well in my subie world.

all of my subaru's have given me problems.Yet I want to go offroad. Then again I could always got buy a samuari, especially because I want a Hatchback. But then I look how expensive everything is for a sammy...So maybe if I get a well maintained hatch then replace the radiator and the T stat right off the bat it will work for a while...I wonder if us offroading objects that were never designed to be offroaded might be why the have problems. If they wernt ment to be offroaded then why do they have a true 4x4 system with a high/low "transfercase".Or why is everything so rugged on them apart from the axles, and cooling system,etc...

Bush, chill man. I bought a '89 RX, a black RX, from a junkyard and in the 2 years I owned it, I drove it 100 miles because I blew the engine in it 3 times.... I bought the car for $150 and after 2 years, and 3 engines (plus a 4EAT -> manual swap, complete 5-lug swap, mass amounts of parts like TD04 turbo, Delta cams, and so on), I stripped it of what it was worth and it went back the the scrap yard...... Yes, it is a love/hate relationship but I've owned a good 20 Subarus or so and I'm still going.

Don't know why/how though:lol:

I already have the love/hate. It's in my screen name, born 1985 and has, so far, been the story of my life. Pathetic, I know.

The loyale kicked me where it counts and I've lost all faith. I hate being stranded on a highway left turn lane with smoke billowing out of the hood. The typical 'old car' syndrome.

Funny thing is I drove it 27 miles. Who knew? This one isn't getting much love from me after the 3hr drive north for some parts and a headache w/title stuff. Gotta cut it loose!

hahaha. That sounds pretty bad. I'm chill though. But the money situation is a little tight, and having to purchase two EA82T's to put into the GL10 worries me....

I will be going to get the other one on Tuesday, I believe. Hopefully have GL10 running by wednesday...pray for me.

This loyale is shot. Speedometer doesnt work. Needs new strut. Blinkers dont work. Got a dent on the hood. Interior kinda ugly....dash not put together.....

But I still love it. lol

I love subarus. I hate the EA82 motor.

I've been left on the side of the freeway sooo many times because of the stupid EA82. whether it was the distributer, timing belts, blown intake mani gaskets, etc. etc. etc.

we bought 2 '92 subarus about 12 years ago, both FWD, both auto, one a loyale, one a legacy. my mom put 215k worry-free miles on the legacy in that time period. with nothing but basic maintenence. the loyale was left to me......and was quickly replaced.

now my mom has moved onto a '01 legacy. in a year and a half, it's already seen close to 50k miles, with zero problems. it's got a little wheel bearing noise, and the headlights mysteriously failed (turned out that the previous owner used nothing but electrical tape to attach the new headlight plugs...), and that's it.

now I've got the motor from the '92 legacy in my loyale. motor had 245k on it when I swapped it. I've put almost 20k on it since then, mostly in town....delivering pizzas. zero major problems. it had lots of wheel bearing/axle noise....but I'm replacing all that with newer, better stuff.

and my dad drives a '94 legacy GT (actually...I'm driving it while I'm uber upgrading my loyale....he can drive the caravan), $350 ebay special, listed as a parts car.....a few days of work, and it's as reliable as anything.

long story short. if they've been maintained well, and isn't an EA82 engine, they're extremely reliable. heck, even the EA82, if maintained meticulously, can be a reliable motor.

I know how y'all feel... I have 3 too.. My Loyale has given me 5 years and almost 45K worry free miles...yes things have broke but it has never ever let me sit and I havent taken the best care of it at times due to money reasons. My XT6 has let me sit twice now and its my true love/hate thing..I love to hate that car..but wont get rid of it. Now I stepped into the EJ series and to tell ya the truth..I am trying not to like it as much as my Loyale but it isnt happening..I am starting to LOVE my Imp. I have already put over 3000 miles on it in about a month....no worries...not bad for free

list of problems in 40,000 miles (106K-146K) for me:

I got the car because it needed timing belts. Put them on, no preparation, no book, only my bare skull wrench to get me through the job.

Rear brakes

(haynes books lists the 4wd specs for rear castle nut torque under "specs" and fails to mention 2wd models have much much lower torque rating, which leads me to...)

Rear Wheel Bearings

Alternator

(easy fix, just some $$ because I was 40 miles from home and had no choice but to buy from the parts store that had it)

Starter

(I RE BUILT the one in the car after it completely died, and all I did was disassemble, clean, shrug and hope that the worn out brushes would work better after the cleaning, and it worked great for about four months of pizza delivery starting ten to twenty times a day; then a JY starter went in and no problems since)

Ignition switch

(I opted to install a relay and do the job "right" where most just throw in a pushbutton switch. I have had enough electrical fires; I will take the relay thankyouverymuch.)

Throttle position sensor

(this one was a simple piece of cake, just involved some disassembly)

Separately, in order, a thermostat, then radiator hose, then water pump, then head gaskets (replacing the radiator along the way) Only I can be blamed for this. I was ignorant of the "don't let it overheat" rule; in the process I went from being a hack to a real mechanic, in about 20 hours of work, total, spread over six or seven different "instances"

and then there was my spark plug problem.

To me, a used car is GOING to have issues. I bashed one tie rod end on a curb, but that was my fault and the rest were problems that

A. were bound to occur in an old used car AND

B. were VERY easy to isolate, diagnose, and repair.

Look at alternator locations on cars in the junkyard. Look at starter locations. MAYBE a head job is a bit simpler on your standard I4 FWD econobox, but thats pushing it. if the EA82 has a "problem-prone" service life of 200-350K miles or higher, than I will STILL take it over a honda, an escort, a cavalier, a toyota.. even a similar vintage Nissan, and I LIVE by the Rising Sun (and its accompanying blue bar )

"Reliable" is a dangerous word; it shouldn't carry an aura of "no-breakie!" with it, it should only mean what I said above: easy to isolate and diagnose and repair problems when they occur. Problems WILL come up on any car; and any model WILL have individual "lemons" so to speak, but in the end I wholeheartedly love the design and engineering that went into our little trapezoid mobiles.

and I don't even own a 4wd!!!

EDIT

I left out the single most PITA job I have had thus far!!! The DAMN TURN SIGNAL FLASHER!!! took me over three hours to find that piece of crap!

Caboo... What The Hell!!!! You're only 22!!! If you've been driving since 16, that's only 6 years of driving. Let's see, 20 Subies in 6 years.... that's 3.33333333333333333 Subies per year!!! I'm way impressed!:lol::lol::lol:

My first Soob was Cy, short for Cyclops. This $400 1980 white wagon had a 1600 that had a bad cylinder and smoked like a crop duster. I absolutely LOVED that little car. Hauled my band equipment 'round town. Got me everywhere I needed to go, including trips from San Diego to Lancaster and Fresno and even Big Bear for some skiing. The suspension on those models is miraculous for such a tiny car. It felt like there was nothing it couldn't do, nowhere it couldn't go. Oh, it was named Cyclops because, of coarse, had and thus named because it had the much coveted passing light, or "third eye". I would have kept it forever, but it have a bad case of rust and I couldn't afford to replace the engine.

Next was "Whitey" the $300 N/A SPFI 87 5 speed hi / lo wagon. Had it for three plus years. Put a new engine in it and had absolutely no problems with it, except for a broken timing belt, caused by a bad tensioner. I needed a truck for my business, and ended up doing an even trade for a 94 Toyota V6 pick-up extra cab with broken valves. That Toyota engine (3VZ) is a PITA to work on.

Now I have Murphy, the infamous $500 '87 T-Wag, and Red, the $300 '94 Alpine Legacy wagon, both with new engines. Because I had never worked with a turbo before, it was looking for resources on the web and found USMB. Murphy got it's name because everything that could go wrong during an engine swap did; I won't go into it since it's all documented on this forum (search for Murphy or $500 and see what comes up). Regardless, Murph is the funnest car to drive, especially now that it has the RX suspension and a FT4WD 5 speed with locking diff. can't wait for the snow. Red is the newest addition to the family. The only real challenge here was getting the title cleared. It took six months. This wagon is so refined compared to Murph. That engine is smooth. Great for those long road trips to San Diego. The suspension was not designed to push any limits, but will get you where you want to go in comfort.

So, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it!:burnout:

Yep. When someone makes a face at me because I like Subaru's, I will, if we're by the car, show them the location of alternator, A/C compressor, P/S pump, and starter, and then they get it, especialy if they've had to have any one of those replaced in their newer Honda's, Toyota's, and especialy Ford or GM prodcts.

Well to be honest, I've been into Subarus since the summer of '03 so 4 years of having tons of Subarus, mostly parts cars but most of them ran and such....

Plus I also have/had a bunch of other cars from 2 '88 Camaros to a '76 Triumph:rolleyes:
