cyberbackpacker
Have the harness almost pulled (had to stop because of rain-- figures first rain storm in three years is the one weekend that I have a HARD deadline), but I cannot get to the harness behind the hvac box... I tried to pull the box but it isn't budging... took all nuts/bolts off that I saw, but still nothing... Any advice/tips/tricks to get this last part of the harness? Thanks. subaru360
You didn't say what your working on. But I just pulled the harness out of a 96 outback and I had to take the heater box out to get it out. Also the box wont slide forward until the hoses are off. subaru360
The older ones might be different. I've never had one of those apart. I'm sure somebody else will know.
Numbchux
heater box has to come out. and the heater core lines that go through the firewall tend to make it an enormous pain. I don't remember how it's supposed to come off, but I do remember that when my dad and I did it, there was some cutting involved

cyberbackpacker
i ended up taking a hammer to it the heater box and A/C...:-p they don't like to move... Ended up being two things holding me back with the heater box- first the hoses on the heater box inlet need to be removed-- and of course the hose clamps were put on in such a way that the head of the screw was pointing down to the tranny where it was impossible to get a screwdriver to. Lovely. Got that taken care of. Then the other thing was the freaking ducting that runs on the tranny hump into the rear passenger compartment. Nevertheless once those were removed, it slid right out.

SubPar
+1 for hammer. Not a fun job, but the process will give you a lot of insight how everything goes together. (After you have smashed it to bits. )
