Code 13 and car wont ignite...

All the parts were in stock, and they are local to me so I had the parts in 1/2 hour.

 

Atsugi (Paraut) OEM water pump: $52.00

Upper and lower smooth idlers (GMB): $46.00 ($23.00 each)

Cogged idler (GMB): $24.00

Tensioner roller (GMB): $34.00

Timing belt (OEM Japan): $29.00

A/C accesory belt: $7.50

PS, and Alternator belt: $10.00

Antifreeze: $8.97

 

Total: $211.47

 

I didn't replace the hydrualic tensioner as they generally don't wear out on the EJ22's, and mine was at 132k. If I had wanted it, it would have been another $97. I didn't do the cam and crank seals either as they didn't show evidence of leakage - they are cheap and I normally do them but each engine is individual and this one seemed so well maintained that I didn't bother. I am counting the accesory belts and the antifreeze in that total though - which aren't technically part of the "timing belt" job.

Ouch... I called 4 auto part stores and they quoted nothing less than 250 just for the tensioner/pulley kits... some including the belt. Only one parts place had it in stock... Whats the number to that place?

Should I use brake cleaner to clean inside? Theres a bunch of oily residue buildup in the timing belt case...

 

Brake cleaner will do the job alright but be careful using it around the seals. I would recommend using regular cleaning solvent with a brush.

She's fixed!!! started up right away!

 

Then it died. I forgot to hook up the big air hose that goes to the engine block. :) Purrs like a kitten..

 

I pulled the oil pump to check the notorious back plate screws that tend to come loose, they were tight. When I put it back in, I snapped two of the seven bolts... One came out in one piece(barely)- the other, was broken totally. Luckily part of the bolt was sticking 1/4 inch out of the block... used a vice grip to get it out... scared me a bit. napa sold me more bolts and i'm back in business!!!

Since there aren't too many 90's legacy's around Memphis, there's a 90 wagon and 94 sedan at the local U-pull-it yard and i've been scavenging lots of small and big things such as:

 

Seatbelt motor, track, and door latch(didn't fix the defunct pas. side seatbelt)

 

Auto seatbelt computer(did fix that problem)

 

Rear driver side tail light assembly

 

timing belt cover (better condition than mine)

 

crank shaft sensor (broke when I tried to pull it out of oil pump)

 

rubber sleeve for fuel filter

 

ball joint

 

stock tape player from 90 model- had an aux. input for port cd player or my iPod (now I can rock the ipod with out tape or fm adapter and not prone to theft)

 

bracket mounts for cover that goes over engine (rubber gaskets were shot on mine)

 

I love junk yards...

In another recent thread, someone contacted Subaru about a seatbelt issue and got it all fixed for free, as Subaru said something like 'Subaru seatbelts are warranted for the useful life of the vehicle'.

Ouch! Well, luckily all this cost me was 10.00 for the computer. I un-installed the stuff that didn't fix the problem and returned it.

 

It also cost me about 20 hours of messing with it in 100+ degree memphis weather...

Somoene else pointed out that the seatbelt warrantee only extends back to like 95 or 96 or something. At any rate it's a pain to deal with dealers on stuff like that. Most are less than helpful.

Oh ok I didn't see the '95 or '96 restriction. I guess that means Subaru considers the 'useful life of the vehicle' to be maybe about 13 years? That's pretty reasonable I guess; I think many manuf's aim for a 10 year lifespan.

 

Actually I think it's just that they didn't start offering that warrantee till around then.
