The Beast I Drive
oh, I was just wondering, cuz it would be cool to have a port for each cylinder on an EA81, and the smaller combustion chambers would make more compression.
carfreak85
There is more benifit to be had by converting to dual intake ports than dual exhaust ports.
The Beast I Drive
There is more benifit to be had by converting to dual intake ports than dual exhaust ports. I know, but it would be nice if there was a head for ea81 that had both, dual intake ports and dual exhaust. hhmmmmm.....
maudsland
These are as rare as rocking horse poop, even more rare than a unsold still wraped in plastic FF-1, but around there are twin exhaust port heads to suit a ea71, and i am sure that the 71 and 81 heads interchangeable. How do i know about these rare heads, ive seen a set from a guy who rallied a factory subie back in the mid 70's. I bought my first FF-1 sports off this guy. In saying i have modified a set of ea63 heads to fit a ea71, went like a rocket, i think i said how it was done somewhere in this thread or another FF-1 linked thread. Cheers Thierry
carfreak85
I know, but it would be nice if there was a head for ea81 that had both, dual intake ports and dual exhaust. hhmmmmm..... Its either Sub4 or Ram Performance. One of those companies made heads with dual intake ports/single exhaust ports (Ram I think). The other had dual in, dual out (Sub4 I think). Also built to the tune of $1500 and $2000 USD respectively.

Kostamojen
Day 12 I got the engine out today courtesy maudsland's suggestion! Lets just say, lots of grease everywhere, I NEED a hot tank badly!!! Ill see if I can get one tomorrow... I disassembled most of the engine as well. The shortblock is TINY! Its even quite a bit smaller than the EA71 from my old wagon... The pistons are small as well as you can see. As for the cylinder heads, they will need some work for better flow... They need port matching to the EA63 intake manifold I have, plus could use some exhaust port work. It MAY be possible to run larger valves too, but i'm not sure whats involved with that. Anyway, enough talk, here are the pics...
Kostamojen
Damn it, if it wasnt for that flywheel connection point on the crankshaft, I could get the cam out without spliting the block
fshnidiot
Looking good!!!! Is that my old manifold all cleaned up?? That baby's gonna rock with that Weber on it!!! Frank (fshnidiot)
Kostamojen
Ya, thats your manifold, and thats not even close to being 100% cleaned yet :-p I'm still deciding on whether to have it thermal coated as well!
Kostamojen
So, I've been picking up a few things here or there online... Most of the new ff-1 documents are courtesy McBrat The intake manifold is courtesy fishnidiot And the Weber carb is courtesy Jibs
Caboobaroo
I've been snatching most of the FF1 manuals on ebay:-p I have 6 different ones now:banana:
Kostamojen
You mean the service manuals or the brochures? My ff-1 service manuals are technically "on loan"... I'm kind of looking to find my own pair. The 1300 and 1600 manuals I just bought on Ebay for extra info for this build in case I need it.
Caboobaroo
service manuals my friend. I'll get some pics when I can!

Towel Rail
The Samba, another car forum I frequent, has an archive section with complete, high-quality scans of owner's manuals throughout the years. Just a thought... - Scott
Kostamojen
Scanning and posting images takes me like 100x longer than posting photos from my camera... If I ever have a couple weeks where I don't have a job and nothing else to do, ill get back to you about that...
Kostamojen
Here is actually 1 page of scans from one of the brochures I touched up for posting...
Kostamojen
Should I try and split the short block? I really want to have a cam done and maybe some custom higher compression pistons with new rings and bearings and such, but i'm not sure if it can be rebuilt properly due to those copper rings... What do you guys think?
TheSubaruJunkie
I think you should do a 1600 and forget that 1100.
crazy D
I think you should do a 1600 and forget that 1100. bullsh****t!!!!! it would be way cooler to build up a 1.1 cuz nobody has one! everyone with a first gen basically has a Ea71....(besides pre-76') -Dalton
The Beast I Drive
Definitely think rebuilding the 1100 is the way to go
Kostamojen
I figured some of you might enjoy this comparison, gives you a better idea of exactly how small the EA61 actually is... As you can see, I got the valves out today. I'm still not sure what I should do about the shortblock... Leave it or split it? It needs cleaning at the very least, which is hard to do while its not split. But if I cant get it back together again, theres no good reason to split it...
