Is the S/R 4wd on my 94 Loyale capable of driving on pavement?

I also determined the gearbox whine occurs only in 1st gear. A tranny fluid and rear diff fluid change is in order.

a tranny whine in first gear is nothing to worry about, the first gear is straight toothed instead of helical, this is why it whines

why is it straight toothed I hear you ask? well, straight toothed gears are stronger then helical toothed gears, and there is nothing wrong with a stronger first gear ;)

nope, 1st gear is helical. the only straight cut gear in a 5MT is reverse. and that's just to ease engagement.

 if that's the case, why do both of my trannys (I swapped trannys a while ago) only whine in first gear? maybe it's something S/R full time 4WD trannys do?

What I had heard is that 1st gear is not completely straight cut like reverse, but not as helical as the other gears. My 1st gear whines pretty nicely... but not quite the same as reverse whine. 5MT dual range. Come to think of it, the granny gear 1st on my dad's old ford truck whines too...

could be.....I've got one apart in the basement, and 1st might be different, but it's hard to tell.

I think it's just a result of wear. cause I've had some trannies that did whine a bit in first, but most of my EA82 5MTs, as long as they had good fluid, where very quite in all forward gears. and now this '94 LGT I'm driving, is louder in first and second than it is in reverse, and it's got 3 week old Scotty's Cocktail in it.
