I)arkZrobe
Just wondering what would you pay for a 1999 Legacy Outback with a manual transmission, ABS, All Wheel Drive (Dont they all have that at this point?) AC, and a very good audio system? It is blue and has minor scratches. 125,000 Miles on it. If there is any other questions ask away.

chef_tim
Have the head gaskets been replaced???
porcupine73
'99 auto trans especially thoroughly check out. Some of the autos got the delayed shift into drive syndrome as well. I think also some number of the speedo heads went south. Then also the potential HG issue. Not at all saying it's not a good vehicle; just things to be aware of going in. Dickensheets
Thorough test drive mandatory. Check all fluids. Tires must match.
Manarius
3500 if the headgaskets have been replaced. 2500 if not.
I)arkZrobe
3500? Really... For colorado springs kbb says $9,725 I payed 5500 for mine from the dealership. Headgasket has been replaced and overall has been running fine since I got it (I think it has almost been a month now) I want to know where I could get one for 3500... I can't justify paying over $4000 for a car with over 125k on it. Maybe I'm just a low baller, but to me, over 100k in miles means it gets hit with drastic cuts from me. mnwolftrack
I'd also like to know where these can be found in good running condition for only $3500. Around here in snow country, they go for 5-7k. $4500 would be the low end for something, and that would mean a rough body, torque bind, bald tires, etc... Around here, dealers go by KBB.com values. For retail for a '99, I think the value will be somewhere in the mid 7500. That being said, things typically don't sell for book value around here, so 5-7k is more realistic. porcupine73
The original question asked was "what would you pay for..." Different people are willing to pay different amounts for different things at different points in time. It doesn't mean there is anyone willing to sell the item at the price the person is willing to pay.
idosubaru
private sellers you will typically get a better deal with. also keep in mind that you're dealing with a board full of subaru specialist mechanics who know this board can help them. this board alone can help you save thousands on a car. it takes patience, time and knowledge to find one cheap. any dealer is not a place to get one cheap and even private sellers are sometimes looking for top dollar so they can go get a newer car. wtdash
In the NW (Spokane or Seattle), this is a <$6500 (Private Seller) car w/stock stereo...HG issue or not. I've seen these on Ebait for $3500, but they also have more NE rust (no offense) than metal in places. I bought a '97 from a guy in FL, and even after having it shipped it was still $1000 under local book value @ the time. IMHO, it's all about location, location, location. biglittledog
I'm up in Boulder, and I'd hazard a guess at 5500 low (maybe needs tires soon or hasn't had it's belt changed yet, etc.) to around 7000 if everything's really hunky dory with a good meticulous owner with records. I've watched for Subie's for a while on CL and bought one for my son and one for me in the last year. The hard part is figuring out which cars have actually sold since they are usually deleted postings. My opinion of KBB is very low just to mention it. I think they are a willing tool of used car dealers and their retail prices are inflated. I'd probably have a hydrocarbon test done for 40 bucks in addition to all the usual stuff just to make sure you don't have an HG problem. Good Luck hunting down there in C-Springs! elborak
http://www.kbb.com/KBB values are generally quite inflated. You'll get a more accurate estimate at http://www.edmunds.com.
I)arkZrobe
I bought the car cause I thought it was a fair price (They where originally asking 8500, they screwed up on the craiglist ad (So they said) and I got it for 5500 Flat) I had been looking for some time and the closet I could get in the 3500 area was a Impreza Outback in not so great condition. As for the car, tires are pretty new. I just replaced the windshield, it has some weather related damage but no rust (My last car was more rust then car and I wanted less rust) Overall the car runs great. I think it may have a little bit of a clutch issue cause it sometime gives me problems shifting into 1st and reverse where I have to let go of the clutch and push it back in. I think with colorado springs the price is higher then most places and especially when it is a all wheel drive car getting close winter.
biglittledog
That sounds like a decent price to me although you should maybe have had the clutch symptom checked out. Do you have to double clutch to get it in gear like an old truck? Where does the clutch engage on the pedal? Close to the floor, midway, or near the top? Does it do this only when cold? Better minds than mine will have a good chance at figuring it out here... AWD selling in the fall here in Colo. = Motorcycles selling in the spring...you pay a little more. Congrats on the new rustfree car!
I)arkZrobe
I am still new to driving clutch... But it does that just sometimes maybe once each time I drive and it is only first and reverse. I love my new car but I still miss my 86 subaru wagon a bit. Something about having a car no one else has (atleast for the amount of rust:lol:)
Towel Rail
IMHO, it's all about location, location, location. How true. I've been looking for an AWD, manual, EJ22 wagon for a month or two now, and it's tough here in Iowa. Either they didn't sell many of that configuration here in the Midwest, or no one wants to give them up! I found a guy two hours away that's selling one, and he's had people from Wisconsin calling him! - Scott
