FT4WD 5 Speed Swap.

Recommended Posts

Well, this week-end is the 1/2 off sale at the J-Yard. I figure I will replace the leaky FT4WD 5 speed resideing in Murph (the $500 87 T-Wag) with a tranny that doesn't leak. I doubt I will be able to find another FT4WD manual, so here is the question. What other trannys will match spline count and 3.7 diff?

I haven't ruled out the option of swapping out the 3.7 rear diff. with a 3.9, if neccessary. Has anyone noticed a difference between the two as far as performance goes (Caboobaroo)?

PS. Both front halfshafts, and one rear, are new, so I don't want to replace them.

I thought XT6's had the S/R 3.9 FT4wD and the turbo RX/GL10s had the D/R 3.7 FT4WD boxes.

I'd say like mikeshoup said, PT4WD from a turbo car is the easiest.

Wheres the your box leaking from? Might not be too hard to fix you know?

In a turbo car, the 3.9 is awesome for anything but driving on the freeway as it will make the engine hover higher in the rpm range. My '87 coupe on the other hand has the RX box in it (dual range FT4WD 5-speed) with the 3.7 and its great for the SPFI in my car. I get great around town performance since I always have it in 4lo, then when I get on the freeway, I slap it in 4hi and in 5th gear, I can pass people just by downshifting into 4lo.

Phiz, can't tell where the leak is, but there are shavings in the fluid that remains in the tranny housing.

Cab., that is a good description of the 3 A/T - Good around town, revved way too high on the freeway.

Hey NSD:

I would very much be interested. This doesn't have to be a "right now" type thing. I have an 84 Tercel in the garage that needs to get fixed and sold first.

PS. Where in CA do you live. Is it NorCal? I would drive to get the tranny. I'm in a band in San Diego, yet I live in Fresno. So if I'm willing to drive across half the state , 348 mile, to play a gig, I'm more than up to driving the other half of the state to get a tranny. Plus, one of my favorite winerys is up there.

Man! Fresno to SD, that's a long ride. I live in Jackson, which is 45 miles SE of Sac. I travel every so often from home down to LA and the drive gets old quick. My friend who has the property where the tranny is is out of Country til January, but I can always go up their before and get it. I gave it to him along with the rest of the drive train and air suspension from an 86 Sedan, for my Brat. He's more interested in the engine and suspension than the tranny (he's wanting to go auto) for one of his many Subies, besides, he's got LOTS of Subie stuff (and he told me he didn't care about the tranny). If you need it before then, I can always go and get it.
