manual tranny lube?

Hey everyone:wave: I've got a 85 brat with d/r 4spd.have a little tranny issue,shifts into 3rd fine when cold but after warmup it gets a little temperamental.doesn't always want go in or it tends to grind a bit/lot,could some or all of the problem be in the lube? I'm sure a change of fluid wouldn't hurt anything but would /or could it be the cause of everything?and what is the correct fluid for tranny? I've heard that there is more than one kind of lube to use:confused: any and all advise is appreciated:D

for those tranny's it's reccomended i believe for the 75-90w gear oil. i had a similar problem with mine. changed the oil and wa la it's fixed. i wouldn't reccomend the atf in the tranny of that car. because it leaves a thinner coat of oil and our tranny's aren't as tight of tollerances so use the proper oil.

Hi Im new to this and i agree with General Dissorder on this one, but after working in the shop as a student tech for a couple of years, I have found that if you hear a grinding noise upshifting than the synqro has failed and will need to be torn down and rebuilt, but if the noise is only when downshifting than the synqro is on its way out and a chang in lube may help. this is because it is easyer to speed up a gear than it is to slow it down. My information comes from Chrysler text books and Honda America text books.

ok I have to dissagree on this.

I had almost the identical problem on the RX when I first picked it up and was sure that the only fix was a tear down and rebuild.

just to get the car in shape to run for a while I changed the fluid to red line MTL. after a few good drives the grind is completely gone. shifts great now. I have done this to a few other cars with similar results.

It may not work in all cases. GD does have a good point. that is the same stuff i learned back in school too. tranny rebuilding sucks. save that as a last resort and try the MTL first.

I put Redline MTL in my wagon's tranny - still grinds on the downshift into third - the difference between Redline and the crap that was in it is noticeable, albeit small. I will use Redline in all my manual trannies from now on because they are old, and I want the better gear protection.

 

I discussed this with Mudrat79, and he said that of the 20 or so trannies that he's put Redline in, about half were corrected by the use of Redline, the rest still had a grind of some sort.

 

Sometimes it helps - sometimes it doesn't, but at least your not putting some foreign fluid in it like ATF (not to say that this doesn't work - it just isn't comfortable for me). The Redline is what is supposed to go in there, it's just a high quality, and will sometimes help grinding issues, and prolong a tranny that really needs to be rebuilt
