I have a annoying crack I get from the dash when I down shift

Recommended Posts

I am bored lol so I thought Id ask, I also searched but didn't come across anything. But anyway today was pretty annoying when you put the car in manual mode or heck even in D i get a loud crack from the dask board as it seems when it down shifts. I am wondering what I would need to fix this horrible flex in my car. Maybe a motor mount, tranny mounts? the brace going from the firewall to the transmission bell housing maybe? What do you think is the issue please tell me :-p Thanks.

Well lets start with the basics. Is the noise happening exactly when you put it in gear or after you put it in gear and stomp the gas? Is it a shifter noise or definite body flex, and please describe the noise more, this could be axles, tranny or even something caught in the shifter.

It is a automatic. Definitely is flex as even in D when you get off the gas you can hear it. Its pretty rough and loud. Still haven't replaced my front cv's though which have alot of play could that be the reason why? I almost seems like the car is seperating LOL.

Check the dogbone motor mount under the hood (torque rod it hink). It mounts where the dashboard would be on the firewall.

If thats shot it can do what you have described.

Doesn't seem shot but I can definitely get it to flex a bit and wiggle if I try. I was thinking about replacing that piece with one from a wrx or something. Its a awfully thin bar.

Its thin because it doesnt do a lot of work. It just keeps the engine from going through the radiator.

Check other mounts too.

Another possability is a cracked flex plate, but you would here that as a ting-ting-ting at idle.

My '90 Leg wagon does this too. I thought it was just the cooler weather. Does yours do it regardless of temp?

Yes!! When is warm outside there is 0 crack noises on take off or downshift manually. But when its cool outside thats when it is most annoying. Well I did drive with torque bind for a while so I guess I should change all the easy mounts like the transmission mount, the bar that goes from the firewall to the bell housing and see if that helps. Hmm about the flex plate I wonder. Someone told me that to seems to drive fine but seems weird seems like its not giving as much as it usually does. At idle though its normal no ticks, just sometimes I get a tick when its cold outside, but I think its the lifters.

Inspect them dont just go throwing poarts at them. the one that takes the biggest beating in the tranny mount. The dogbone rubber can age and fail.
