Trans and Diff Fluid.... What Kind

I didnt do any transmission oil on my RX, but i did flush the LSD in it. And I used Castrol 85/90wt gear oil with LSD addative.

 

Its extremly important you use gear oil that is for LSD differentials. I bought the addative because I couldnt find LSD specific oil, and the addative was all i could find.

For the RX trans, I'm going to be putting in some of Scotties Cocktail mix, very common over on NASIOC. Here's the list of what it takes along with the amount, but remember, this is for a WRX tranny.

Uncle Scotty's Cocktail of 1qt Redline lightweight shockproof, 1qt Pennzoil or GM Synchromesh, 2qt Castrol HypoyC 80w-90.

I'm planning on using an OEM gear oil made for our LSDs and hopefully I can find some. If not, like Junkie said, a regular gear oil with an LSD additive works or an aftermarket LSD gear oil will work for it.

 

The amount you'll need for the tranny is 3.5 quarts according to the '87 FSM. Rear diff capacity is .8 quarts

I would shy away from Uncle Scotties cocktail as i used that in my old 04 WRX and it made the trans grind going into 4th gear and sounded like it was going to fall apart.I put the stock trans fluid back in and all was good again.

This is just my experience but others seem to like it.

I run the cheap crap in my car. Some generic 80W-90 gear oil that comes in a black gallon jug. Run it in both my rear diff and transmission.

 

Transmission doesn't grind going into any gears, and no noise from the rear diff. Only problem I've noticed, on cold mornings the trans takes a bit to shift. Just have to be gentle until things warm up a bit.

I put redline 75w-90ns in my transmission last winter and it made a significant difference in the really cold weather. With the old fluid, the wagon didn't like to shift or move too easy after sitting all night in sub 20 degree temps..

i had been running valvoline 75-90 for a couple years, but had never been happy with cold weather shifting. so, about a month ago i put in some mobil 1 75 -90, and the difference is amazing. before, going from 1st to 2nd was just about impossible when cold and it took about 5 minutes of driving to loosen things up and the shifting to become ok. now it goes from 1st to 2nd like butter, even on the couple of 28 degree mornings we had. in the past, it would have been 1st to 3rd for the first 4 or 5 miles. excited to see shifting performance when the temp drops down to near 0.
