Was just wondering what type of mufflers people might be using on their EA81's. I have a Hatch and its hopefully just about to pass smog when i take it in this week, and after i want to put on a muffler thats not so restrictive but i dont want loud. Slight tone maybe. I was also wondering what everybody thinks about a cone filter on an EA81 with a spfi conversion. Have to buy a MAF adapter to fit a cone but i was just wondering if i should go with a cone filter or stick with the spfi airbox that is just sucking in air from the engine compartment and not a duct that pulls in air from the front of the car like the EA82 that i got the injection from. And if i should go with a cone, what type? I have heard non-oiled so i wont mess with the MAF, but i have also heard of people running K&N filters with no problems.

On my Brat I've just changed out the original rear muffler (rusted to bits) with a stainless "Turbo Tuf" ($24 from the wreckers from a EA81 sedan - I think the 2wd and 4wd muffler designs are the same) and it sounds stock at anything upto about 3000 rpm, then has a nice tone when under hard acceleration. For the front muffler I have a "hotdog" style that's about to be replaced (I can hear it bouncing around inside  ), but I'm not sure if I can get away with anything much bigger without ending up with a WRX-type drone...

I also fitted a MPFI EA82 y-pipe (so I get the 02 sensor bung for the SPFI install), which is basically a bolt-up operation (I had to do a slight bit of grinding to clear the LHS rail). There doesn't appear to be any change to the diameter of the pipes from the engine, but the pipe from the Y is definitely larger than the EA81.

Dean.

  • 4 weeks later...

i like the sounds of a flowmaster or magnaflow muffler, something like the ones they market towards muscle cars, usually not too loud, but have a nice tone. but then agian, i also like a properly tuned "tuner" muffler, like the n1 mufflers. simple, compact, doesnt sound to bad. i am looking at a custom set up for my brat involving a dual cannister muffler that i used to have on my rx and impreza. was thinking about seperating the two mufflers on it and splitting em to go to either side of my brat, possibly have them both exit where the side steps are. i would have that to be removable to bolt on a normal rear exiting exhust for times when i have to have a quieter set up or for long trips, ect... eh, either way, i plan on having fun.:headbang:

Check out the EA performance page under '80s', by SubieMech.

I followed his advice on the muffler for my '86 wagon, and am very satisfied. Just a nice burble outside and a bit of a hum inside (I can still hear the fuel pump). Big Bonus: I had terrible pinging under load (had to reset timing to 18 degrees)... it disappeared after the muffler change(was able to go back to 20 degrees).

I got a THRUSH muffler from Advanced Auto Parts.....I think it was 26 or 27 bucks. Now I have a little more low end torque, no pinging, and I'm clearing 33 and 34 MPG (Important, now that our gas is nearing 3 bucks a gallon in central VA).

I'm always looking for posts that discuss methods of increasing one's fuel milage......anyone seen anything new??
