NorseKode
http://www.daviescraig.com.au/release.html Aside from the extreme price tag, it seems like a brilliant mod. Kalo
ShawnW
Im not sold. The belt driven ones are extremely easy to service and our alternators aren't that great (stock) so I think thats a step in the wrong direction for most older Subaru's. NorseKode
Yeah, the alternator situation (stock) sucks. Especially the replacement price. The GM replacement mod is one of the best ideas I've run across yet. If, by "...easy to service..." you mean "easy to replace" I'd have to agree. It's also quite a bit cheaper. But this thing is added in line with the lower rad hose, which makes it even easier to replace, I would bet. But I think I'd stand an even chance of machining replacement parts for a magnetic impeller than machining a pump shaft and bearing sleeves. As for the ridiculous price, welll. . . . give it a few years. It'll drop. The only real monkeywrench I can see is power usage claims. How the heck can a .072 KWHour device push 1260 gal/hr through a 1"- 2" hose? Kalo
baccaruda
what'll be REALLY nice is when the industry goes to the (i think) 45v electrical system in cars. then EVERYTHING will be electrically powered like this water pump... 42? thanks steven
stephenw22
yeah. The new (42V, by the way) electrical systems will be sweet. I just drool over things that will now become possible: - a crankshaft-mounted starter/alternator, all in one unit - electric brakes and steering - other electrical stuff (water and oil pumps) - electrically-actuated valvetrains (infinitely-variable intake and exhaust valve timing)
JWX
I don't welcome it. theres already too much stuff to go wrong now and with all those systems electric, there a lot to go wrong. but I do see the good of it. and as long as they put some kind of fall back systems in them it shouldn't be a problem. and now for something that has something to do with the post. I like the idea of an electric water pump it would help cool the engine down after running it hard by keeping the coolant flowing intill the thremostat closed
baccaruda
yeah, you could have a selective shutdown (and start!) process to allow for absolutely minimal engine wear. i'd like to have some sort of anti tailgater/ice-melter lightning gun as long as we're talking about all the extra juice. is that so much to ask? stephenw22
It's true that at first, these electrical systems might be plagued with problems, but so were most mechanical systems when they were first introduced. I'm sure that at first, the electrical systems will all be "assist" systems. Electric-assist steering (which already exists), or braking. BTW, the reason for a 42V system is because 42V = 14V x 3 (the actual battery voltage on these cars will be 36V, but 42V will be the normal operating voltage. At least that's how it was explained to me.
