Actually, I have had very good luck with "directional" tires. The directional tread pattern "clears" the snow very effectively. They are also "siped" to grip the thin sheet of slush/ice that is left after the blocky tread has done its job. Snow tires are less and less about the tread style, and have more to do with rubber-compound these days These tires I have on my brat here look really agressive (and they are in mud) ....but theyre NOT rated for severe snow!
