thealleyboy Posted October 16, 2007 Share Posted October 16, 2007 Did an A/T to D/R conversion on an 88 GL Wagon, and it does not appear that the clutch is engaging properly (acts as in Neutral all the time). All new parts including clips, cable and both bearings. Everything looked good before mating the tranny to the motor, and there were no major issues during installation. Shift linkages/rods are all lubed up and moving as they should. Tried playing around with cable adjustments, and while the pedal "feels" right, nothing happens when shifting into gear. Fork appears to positioned properly. note: I'm working alone, so I cannot see all the mechanisms in action at once. Also, the car has not moved since the swap, and I dont know if rolling it out in neutral would help engage the clutch somehow. Any thoughts on what might be going on here? thealleyboy Posted October 17, 2007 Author Share Posted October 17, 2007 Yeah, the hi/lo system would make sense... What I don't understand is how it could have got stuck in "N" during installation. And why wouldn't it shake out while shifting around the gearbox. I mean, you'd think that this would be a fool-proof operation as far as the rods and linkages. So, would the fix be to simply remove/reinstall the shifting hardware? Or, drop the tranny, and make sure it is mated up "in gear", when re-installing? nvexplorer Posted October 17, 2007 Share Posted October 17, 2007 If its in the D/R neutral position you should be able to pull up or push down on the 4wd stick to engage 4wd and that would tell you if you are inbetween 4hi and 4low. Your car should also move when in 4wd. Hopefully thats all it is and the linkage just needs to be adjusted or pushed all the way down. Good luck! nipper Posted October 17, 2007 Share Posted October 17, 2007 Hehehe this is the old gen version of the virgin switch. The 4wd is in the neutral position, so technically, yes, it is always in neutral. MilesFox Posted October 19, 2007 Share Posted October 19, 2007 hey i broke an axle once and had to park my car on an enbankment and after hitch hiking to a junkyard and returning the with another axle i put it on and my vcar would not go. i already hjad taken one bellhousing bolt out before i thought to check the 4wd linkage, which actually was bumped into "false neutral" when the car ran up over the curb of the embankment the other 2 times i had seen a clutch not engage was once on a 81 glf that sat in a farmers field for better than 10 years and the other instance a clutch was smoked so bad the dust made the disc stick in the flywheel. s'ko Posted October 19, 2007 Share Posted October 19, 2007 I had a cv joint slip of the axle shaft. It just spun around and the BRAT didn't go anywhere b/c of the open diff. Something was binding somewhere. It took rolling the car back and forth in "N", and some hard shifting, but it finally engaged. Thanks for all the comments guys!!
