fastevo
Hey guys, I have been a lurker here for a while now and generally, I am able to find answers to my questions by using the search function....unfortunately I haven't been able to find any info on my latest problem. When I got home yesterday it seemed to take more "pressure" to get my '90 Legacy sedan into park, I went out this morning and the car wouldn't start....it took me a few minutes to figure out the shift light in the dash still read the car was in Drive (though the actual shifter is all the way forward "Park") the shifter will not budge. The car was in need of some band adjustment as it was shifting from 2nd to 4th and then down shifting into 3rd before hitting 4th gear again.....any suggestions, before I start ripping into this thing..I am guessing it is a linkage problem. I bought the car about 3 months ago.....I recently changed the tranny filter and fluids, the old fluid and filter looked good (the guy I bought it from, told me he had changed it about 15,000 miles ago).....the car had sat for about 6 months before I bought it. Funny thing is about a week after I bought it I took it on a 2500 mile round trip to Florida with out a problem. Thank you in advance for any and alll input, regards, Steve
idosubaru
check all the linkages and check the inhibitor switch on the passengers side of the transmission. it's the elecrical device that the linkage attaches to on the passengers side of the transmission. don't know if it's all 4EAT's, but all that i've taken notice of even have some plastic parts that can crack rather easily. check that and make sure it's not just an alignment or broken inhibitor switch issue. john in KY
All my money is on an out of adjustment linkage.
fastevo
Thanks guys, you were correct about the linkage.....it appears to have been hit by something????? I have no idea what it was, but the linkage was bent so far over that it was scraping the underbody of the car???? Got it mostly fixed..... but a little more bending will be needed to get it into park.....just don't want to break the linkage. Thanks again guys. john in KY
Should be a threaded adjustment at the shifter end.
WoodsWagon
Sitting in michagan = wet and rust. The linkage may have rusted and jammed a bit. The hard to push it into park feeling was probably you bending the shift rod. I'd spray the whole linkage down with penetrating oil after straightening it. Might be a good Idea to head to a junkyard and get a spare linkage, because usually when they bend, snapping isn't far behind.
