How do ea82s and ea81s compare? Opinions a plenty.

Neither are suitable for Off Road use... maybe the supercharger, but these small 1.8's will have a tough time with a Super Charger.

 

Why do you say that? The forced induction would work wonders on the poor flowing heads we have, in fact, didn't the factory go to forced induction rather than creating and producing sweet four valve, pent roof heads.

My take on this is:

1. Choose the body style you want

2. Choose the engine you want

3. You have your wheeler...

We all have to remember these babies are lego's in disguise ;)

 

On a personal note I own a lifted EA82 Sedan (very proud of it, since there's is very few lifted sedans in the whole world that we here know of)...I have also driven a lifted EA81 Hatch, granted not off road but have driven one. Jerry's EA81 hatch is cool, small, built well, but still lacked power. My EA82 sedan is not *that* much bigger but is more comfortable to me and actually feels like it has slightly more power (still lacking hardcore) and I'm running 29" tires. Granted I think this is due to my low-2wd mod. In the end I think they are probably fairly compareable. Both underpowered but very capable..also remember it's not just the car, off-roading of any type relies heavily on driver ability!

thats a good point the driver facture has alot to do with it, i know that i have inproved alot since i started and me and my EA82 has gone along way and done alot.

 

me too, my driving style has changed and improved over the last 2 years, no more riding/burning the clutch, Chaz I dont know were you live But we need to have a offroad get together , theres a bunch of us in the northwest, to share and challenge are selfs and machines I will be up for something in a month Scott

i still heat my clutch up once in awhile when i'm stuck trying to get over a rock or something majorly challenging but i think alot of it is because i cooked it pretty good at browns camp once. i was trying to get up this rock step that i ended up cooking it bad enough that i had to work at just backing back down, it was at a place called the waterfall. i think you have posted something about browns camp last summer, so i think your familar with that place.

 

anyway im in portland and i have wanted to wheel with you guys up north but that would mean driving it all the way up there, i don't have a trailer and tow rig. usually you guys go on saturdays, which i work, i could only wheel on sundays. if you are up for it maybe someday we could meet somewhere halfway but i probably won't be able to do anything until about november unless its local, i'm moving in october and won't have much time. anyway let me know what you think and maybe we could get something planned. chaz

Gearing makes the biggest difference for offroad. Even with my Weber powered EA81, I'm still able to climb some pretty gnarly stuff. And do it without breaking my rig (cept for the occasional axle). And now that I have the 4.11 front and rear diffs, it climbs very well. I'm still getting used to the setup, its hard to break old habits. Point and stomp on the go pedal isnt necessary anymore. If I ever do a EJ swap, this would be a awesome rig. But I dont think it would/could compare with the "other" made to 4X rigs out there :Flame:

So, as I'm sitting at home today due to a migraine :dead:, I'm contemplating my subaru future. I want a nice daily driver, and I also want to build an offroad rig. I have an 89 3-door and an 83 dl 4wd wagon. I was originally thinking I'd make the 83 a nice daily driver, and put a d/r in my coupe, but that would leave me with 2 daily drivers and no offroad car. I was thinking I'd lift my coupe, but its in too good of shape to beat up. I could build up my 83, but I like the ea82 wagons better. What should I do?

Lol, I like the torch and sawzall idea. My plans for an offroad car are as follows:

Leaning toward 85-89 wagon

EJ22 swap

5-sp d/r

rear disk swap

6-lug swap

divorced nissan t-case

30x10.50x15s, if not bigger

suspension lift only (so I have room for a front diff)

some sort of locked rear diff. Either an lsd or welded. I'd really like to have a diff thats open for tight turns (like in town), but can be locked for on the trail. What would be the best option? Oh, and whats the best choice for a front diff?

Ha! It surprised me to see that someone else had that pic. I see the end of the tow strap in front of robbie's car. That was when I got stuck in the snow in the blazer and he had to pull me out. That was a fun day. I have more pics from that trip if anyone is interested. Scott, that is in fact an option. That body style is what I'm leaning towards more than anything.

If your like most of us you have all these great Ideas and little money or time to see them through,

Ive found the newer cars have stronger axles, If you go stock the EA81 has greater torque at low speeds then the EA82, weights a big killer drop all you can and dont add alot with heavy bumpers, rack etc. the EJ engine is definatly the way to go if you can swing the cash, go with the style you like as your going to drop alot of time and $$ into this project, I wouldnt make a Offroader into a Daily driver, they are both different animals, I take that back if alls you have is some all-terrain tires and a small lift,

I know exactly what you're saying about the money/time dilemma. Time isnt too much of a factor for me, I work at a shop 8-5, tuesday thru saturday, and most nights the boss is there late, so I have access to the lifts, tools, etc. Money is my biggest roadblock, I usually find myself with little to no money a week after payday, so I end up floating along for another week (till next payday.) My ultimate plan is to d/r my coupe, which is my d.d., and have an offroad car built by wcss 10 so I can bring it to the show. In retrospect, I think it's doable, but again, money is a challenge. I was contemplating working overtime for a week, then the next week spending time after work building my car, etc, but I just don't know if I'll be able to get it done. What'll probably end up happening is I'll spend over a year putting this car together and then never finishing it. I just don't know. I'm sorry if I sound pathetic, it's just that I've gotten high hopes for projects, and then never started them. But this is the one project that I'd really like to see myself do.

i'm selling my 96 legacy that's basically offroad ready. it's the Subaru Stuff For Sale section under "Project Car".

 

it needs headgaskets and i'm only asking 1000 for it.

I'm not interested in newer stuff. I'm pretty sure I'm going to lift an ea82 wagon. Plus the fact that I don't have $1000. And you're all the way in Pennsylvania. But thanks anyway

:headbang: Thats frickin sweet! I could go with something like that, but I want to take a complete wagon (doors, fenders, etc.) and build up from that.
