Mass Air Flow?

Recommended Posts

Please, please tell me someone has a wiring diagram for the mass air flow sensor for:

1986 GL (TURBO)

and

1987-89 Gl ( Turbo)

Mine in my 86 was not hooked up, and is broken. Went to the junk yard, and got one out of an 87-89 turbo GL. Im trying to hook it up by using butt connectors, but the wires are different. On the 86 they are like all diff colors (5 wires). On the one I got from the Junkyard there are also 5 wires, but mostly black and they are fatter (diff gauges) then the other one, so I don't know which ones to connect.

HELP?!

87-89 MAF sensor is NOT compatible with the 86 MPFI system.

83-86 use a flapper style MAF. 87+ use a hot wire style MAF. The two are not interchangeable.

I have an 86 FSM, but no access to a scanner right now. If you don't have the wiring diagram by Monday, I can make a scan.

wait a second.. this car is something of a frankenstein, right?

Make sure that, whatever the air metering device looks like, you get the same unit.

The two different parts have entirely different names, they are so different.. the Air Flow Meter (AFM) from the earlier model is a flapper-door type setup, with a weighted door. The flapper is attached to a potentiometer (think volume knob) and it bases the airflow off that. This unit is big, squarish, and has a the appearance of 1/4 donut, sorta..

The MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor is a tube, with a small black box screwed onto the side of it, The black box has two little tiny wires that stick out into the airflow, and heat up. The sensor checks the temp difference between the two, and interpolates the air flowing in by THAT.

As was said, they are totally incompatible, the air metering device, ECU, and wiring harness are all kinda a package deal. Type A or Type B.

I just wanted to make sure that you don't actually NEED the MAF from the later engine, because this is not the original motor in this car, right?

No, its not the original engine however its also an 86. I figured it out. I got a AFM from an 85, and its the squarish one, with the flapper. I plugged it in and all is well now.

But now I have TWO MAF from 87-89 just hanging out. lol
