Brat acting strange while on the road.

Recommended Posts

Hey,

I just got my brat (84) back on the road, well kinda. I am having a strange issue which is keeping me from driving it. When I take it on the road and start driving it starts sturrering REALLY bad. like it is getting fuel cut or something. Its hard to explain the issue. but driving in 2nd gear it happen around 4k rpms, and in 3rd gear it will keep me below 3k rpms. It feels like it is going to die on me but it doesnt.

the thing i dont get is that if i am driving in a parking lot i can hit 5k rpms in the gears with out a problem. its just when i get on teh road. its the strangest thing.

I have a 1/2 tank of new gas in there, so it isnt a gas issue. I removed that wierd box from teh back passenger side that is connected to the gas tank, could this be an issue? i am not sure what that box does (didnt seem to important)

thanks for the info. I will try replacing the filter, and pump too see if it clears up the issue.

i have a sort of similar problem but mine is right when i get going in the morning. after it warms up its fine. i did put a can of seafoam in the tank could this of clogged up my fairly new fuel filter. no problem to replace just any ideas.

I'm sorry this will be less than concrete, but I think I had a problem like that before. It was either that, or it would do the opposite and try to die until I got it to high revs, can't remember, but it only did it under load. Anyway, my vacuum advance hose wasn't connected. You might want to check the connections of hoses under your hood.

I took off the fuel filter yesterday and backflushed it alittle. the stuff that came out of there was really disgusting. i must have forced 10lbs of rust into that little filter. I am no longer surporzed that it didnt run right. I ordered a new filter from the dealership and it will be here on thursday. so with some luck i will have it roaring for the weekend.

thanks again. i will keep you posted.

replaced the fuel filter tonight. I got the wrong part it looks similiar but doesnt have the top (overflow?) piece. so i stuck it in anyway and bypassed the overflow thing. the verdict is.... IT WORKS! good call. I was able to get it up to 60mph before running into some accleration issues. I also tossed in some NGK7Es which I had laying around from when i turboed my impreza.

the plugs have a different number than the NGKs that i took out of the EA81. but they are the same size and thread. w/ a different nut size. put them in and they fit. took off the distributor cap and cleaned up the points. thing roars like a lion know.

As soon as i fix this exhuast leak at the manifold it is ready for the street.

thanks for all the help!

The one under the hood is a vapor seperator, not really a filter though it does filter the fuel. The one you replaced it with is the fuel filter, which is located just in front of the DS rear wheel.

Lots of Parts Stores will give you the fuel filter when you ask for the seperator. They just don't know our Subarus that well, and most of their info is wrong, especially for the years that the EA81 and EA82 were built together. Around here they keep trying to sell me EA82 parts for the '85 and '86 BRATs and act like I don't know what I'm talking about when I correct them. I have managed to convince a couple of the counter people that I do know what I want, regardless of what the listing says it should be. Really hate it when there's a "new guy" behind the counter.....

Yea Like tom said there is another fuel filter in front of the PS rear wheel. thats the one that is probably causing most of your problems. Chances are your going to have to pull it and bring it to a parts place because most dont have the # of that filter in their computers.

I've actually found that a lot of times they'll have both numbers listed as "fuel filter", so they probably just grabbed the first number that came up. They both look almost the same, except the fuel filter that goes up by the tank (as stated, just poke your head under the driver-side right ahead of the rear wheel, you'll see it) only has the two connections on it:

and the fuel separator/secondary filter has those two plus one on the other end:

(that one is the one it sounds like you've already removed, right by the firewall, in the engine compartment.

If you leave the 2-connector filter in that place, you will (likely) get vapors in the carb, which may or may not cause undesireable effects on drivability.

Just go back to the store, ask for the other one (check it before you leave the store) and put both filters in their correct places.
