Best aftermark clutch for a '96 2.2L?

Recommended Posts

My car has the 1st-gear shudders, and after searching the forum for a while, it looks like I'm in good company. The car has already had its clutch replaced at least once in its past. And it would seem that I'd get another unsatisfactory part if I took it to the Subaru dealership for an OEM part. I've heard good things about ACT clutches, but they don't list any clutch disks for the 2.2L. Would their 2.5L parts work? They list the same flywheel for both the 2.2L and 2.5L, after all.

Thanks!

Yes, the 2.5L parts will work. The hlutch may feel a bit heavy as the pressure plate has a higher clamping force than the 2.2L version. This is b3ecause the 2.2L engine has 135Hp and the 2.5L has 160HP. When I took off hard in my 92 wagon, I would tend to break traction on the clutch (the clutch would spin, sort of like kids "peeling out" only with the clutch instead of the tires). Because of this I went to a 2.5L clutch kit, and that problem is totally gone. Well, almost. The tires will now just break traction on a hard start. I suspect that my engine has just a tiny bit more oomph than it is rated for. . . Of course, considering that I only have 240K miles on it. . .

Oh, and my preference for a clutch is to get an Exedy clutch kit:

Try that site. the 2.5L version is abotu $50 more than the 2.2L version

A company makes some sort of hardened sleve that helps the juddering. Subaru specific and only, just cant think of who makes it or even what it is called. XXXXXX Sleeve...I dunno.

I have an exedy clutch, I would do clutch master if I could do it all over again...Hopefully the car will last thru another clutch

I didn't think that the 2.5L parts would work. I would've ordered the 2.5l clutch kit from an online retailer if this were the case. I researched it, and am almost certain you cant use the 2.5 on the 2.2. This was a while ago tho, so I am not sure.
