(I am assuming it was corrected!) -- Many threads. In general: ~1997-1999 DOHC - Internal HG leak. Requires new HG. 1999-~2002 SOHC- External HG leak. Requires additive. idosubaru Posted October 22, 2007 Share Posted October 22, 2007 basically have to get a 2003 or newer to avoid potential headgasket issues. or a better option is to buy one with a blown headgasket, cheap and easy to find, and install a brand new CCR engine with a 36,000 mile warranty on it. These were used up to and including 1999MY, except maybe Forester got the phase II sohc in 1999MY; not sure The 2.5L sohc 'phase II' have the potential external peeping leak until up ~2003. I'll think I'll stick to 2.2's for now! 2003 is a little too new for me... if '03 is too new , and you like 2.2L engines, you should keep in mind the 90 - 96 2.2L engines were non-interferrence. 97 - until, are all interferrence engines, t-belt, water pump, idler, or tensioner failure equals head / valve damage. so add the cost of a t-belt replacement to any '97 - until' car unless you know for sure when the belt was done. if you don't know when it was done you should do it sooner rather than later. waiting could be expensive.
