can you pull an EJ engine and trans at the same time?

Recommended Posts

done this before on older generations, but have only pulled the engines on newer stuff. i tried it today on a 1997 Legacy and the front diff wouldn't clear the cross member before i ran out of room trying to yank the lump.

some one on here used to go on and on about it. said it was the easiest.

the other way to pull both is to drop them down and lift the chassis up. you leave the wheels on, un bolt the crossmember and control arms(?) , leave the sway bar on ( i think) disconnect the struts, and brakes & steering lines. and of course, whatever else is hanging on, abs.....

i've already got it ready to pull through. i'll just stabilize them and separate the engine from the trans. it looks really, really close to coming out, so i bet it can come out. or maybe certain configurations will come out.

it's easy to do on EA/ER stuff, they come right out.

I'd like to say the Hayne's manual said it could be done together, but the Hayne's isn't exactly helpful either. In fact, it says right in the engine removal procedures that they are more like guidelines than an actual procedure. Having removed both items in '98 Outbacks seperately, I'd just assume remove them seperately. I'm not super keen on swinging that much mass around as one unit. It's one thing if if were a small 2wd front wheel drive sidemount transmission and engine, but that subi transmission is heavy! My Toyota 4x4 transmissions are a LOT lighter than this! Plus, it's a long setup and risky to avoid bumping things around. I couldn't get my cherry picker and load leveler to balance the engine (by itself) very well, and I would assume it would be a lot harder with a few hundred more pounds hanging off the back of the engine. It seems like it would be a lot of stress on the hoist points on the engine (but what do I know). Considering you are basically 4 bolts away from seperating them (and supporting the component you aren't removing first), you might as well pull seperately.

I did it on my 97 Legacy with the 4EAT. After they came out, I decided that I would never pull them together again.

I think I had to lower the car off the ramps in mid pull :-\

If I'm ever going to pull both again, I'll yank the engine, then use the lift to pull the trans out though the top.

I've pulled two engine/4eat Legacy combos (1990 and 1992) in the wrecking yard using an A-frame with chain hoist, they took about 2.5 hours each (on average, the second one went much quicker as I had all the correct tools). As long as everything is disconnected (including halfshafts) they should come out rather easily.

What I want to know is...why on earth would you want to?
i'm replacing both the engine and transmission. in the older generation stuff it's much easier to pull them at the same time, they come right out as a lump, no need to undo extra bolts with no room and then pry/wiggle everything apart in the engine bay.
