Weird EA81 in japanese movie

Recommended Posts

I was watching "God of Gamblers", and durring a shootout in a parking garage, there's a blue EA81 coupe, and there's a close-up of it's badge - it's a "1600 GFT-5"

Anyone want to speculate on what that badging might mean? Maybe that's one of those dual carb 1600's?

Just thought that was kinda cool. Never seen that before. Anyone else seen any weird badges like that?

I'm pretty sure that a GL-5 was just a GL with a 5-spd. There were also DL-5 cars which were... you guessed it, DLs with 5-spds. For instance, I own an "1800 DL Automatic". It has that whole name on the badge. I guess anything that wasn't a plain vanilla 4-spd was considered noteworthy in the early years.

My wagon was a 2WD 5 speed, and it's just a GL...... so there goes that theory on the GL-5. Nice try tho. hehe

GL-5 and GL-10 aren't that weird tho - have seen those, and they were sold here....

But what in the world is a GFT-5? It must stand for something - they don't just pick letters out of the air - the designer must have had some reason for picking that combination.....

You couldn't order them with a stick - Subaru wanted a degree of control over their still experimental turbo engine. They didn't want a bunch of people blowing them up and comming back to the dealership all pissed off if the engine turned out to be a crap pile.

It was probably partially due to the lack of a 5 speed 4WD tranny for the EA81's as well as possible durrability issues with the early trannies. The Auto suck so much power right off the top that it's not so much of an issue, and Subaru gets to decide what RPM's you shift at.... etc.

At any rate, it wasn't an option. If it were, I'm sure MANY more would have been ordered.

Now there may have been some vintage swaps done after the fact, or even in 85 when the 5 speed D/R came out. Someone probably realized that their 84 could take a 5 speed, and threw it in - I'll bet that happened more than once in fact.

But never from the factory....
