calebz
A little progress. Huge thanks to Patrick for not just getting this to me, but doing it so quickly! All three generations of forced induction - EA82 wagon style :-p
daeron
heyyyyy.... is that a water cooled EA82 turbo on the right side of that row? could you take some more pictures of that so I can compare them to the loosely ID'd "subaru turbos" I have up at the shop? I am 90% positive that they are all oil cooled, so they may be early ea82/ea81 turbos.. is there much difference? TIA

TIA From left to right: TD05 TD04 VF7 I'll see if I can get out and get some more pics in a bit. First thing to look for to identify the 'subaruness' of the turbo is the odd shaped uppipe flange. With the exception of aftermarket stuff, they will all be the weird 3 sided flange we all know and love.
4WDFrenzy
HEY! I'm glad that it got to you. I figured that Priority Mail was the way to go. I was just wondering how long that it would take to get to you since we can't get tracking numbers. I think that it is amazing to see the evolution of the turbochargers. That TD05 is going to be insane on your wagon. I just think that it is funny how close to the original(VF7) it looks, well sort of. But it sure won't run out of breath up top like one! -Patrick

Given the rather anemic qualities of the EA82, this is the best of the larger turbos for this thing. Should still spool decently and actually moves more air than a VF22 at lower boost levels. IHI VF-22 435 CFM at 14.7 PSI Small 16G 505 CFM at 14.7 PSI TD04L 403 CFM at 14.7 PSI I just don't know which short block to use. I have a choice of compression ratios. I am tempted to go with the 7.7:1 just so I can use a little more of the turbo Physical fitment looks like it will be no problem. It actually looks like it will fit a little better than the TD04 did. I think I will actually be able to go back to the stock airbox with this thing... Well.. It will look stock anyway. I also have a 2.0 liter shortblock - but nothing else to go with it
calebz
Hmm - decisions decisions High compression? (on the left) Low compression? (on the right)
calebz
I have placed a moratorium on the pictures of the car until it is done - or closer to done. You can still hear some cool things though http://www.element-z.net/subaru/16GNR.mp3 Sorry about the background noise. I keep a high volume fan running when doing open exhaust dumps in the garage :-p That funky bottlerocket sound is the turbo spooling down

4WDFrenzy
Well you know me, I 'm partial to the 7.7:1 block! Man, I can't wait to get back home to my wagon! * re-arranges "aces" in shirt sleeve* -Patrick
calebz
I'm kinda leanin toward 7.7:1 right now. That turbo sounds obnoxious, using 7.7 will let me unleash it a little more I think.

LOL....Does it sound like a semi or a jet? Have you taken that bad boy for a drive yet? Let me know how that thing feels. Oh and don't forget to adjust the wastegate arm so that it doesn't overboost too much. I'm not sure what it was adjusted to when I got it. -Patrick

You can definitely hear that turbo when it starts to wind down from being at speed. Just imagine how it will sound when the engine is under load.
