I have been offered a 91 Legacy 4 door sedan with less than 100k on the clock for $500. Automatic front wheel drive car in excellent cosmetic condition. BUT (ain't there always one) it has a rod knock per the owner so she parked it.

Im thinking that if this car is in this good condition, and yeah if a 100k Sub has a rod knock, what else didn't she take care of...

BUT Im being blind and wishful at the moment, assuming nothing else is wrong with it, is this an EA or an EJ motor in the car? Could the rod knock actually be a skipped tooth on the belt or something else?

I cant take a look at it till Saturday but I want my war-chest ready.

$500 an ok price?

Bill

EJ22 is the motor in it. You might also want to check in the newer gen forum being that we mostly deal with the EA series.

91 Legacy was my first car and still runs like a champ, 216K. I say buy it, best car Subaru ever made IMHO.

I got a 90 (same car, but AWD), for $180 with a bat auto transmission. put a 5 speed out of a wrecked 94, in it...along with a lightened flywheel, free-flowing intake, Borla headers, cat-free exhaust...all stuff from the wrecked 94 sub. It now has 201K on it, and some problems, but nothing that keeps it from getting me around, FAST! Oh.. be sure you have the fatter rear any-roll bar found in many Legacys (but maybe not the 2wd), you can get one at a u-pull it for like $20.

So, yeah, they are a good, comfortable, very reliable car. as for 'rod-knock' some people think the sounds these cars make are more scary than they are...if its there, but not bad, and the car runs well, offer like $350, and drive it till it gets worse.
