ej swap question??

Pressure plate design is entirely different and the EJ pressure plate won't work with the EA transmission.

yarg....may need some creative throwout bearing picking. but the clutch disc itself is the same (or interchangeable, at least...). I think if you could find a way to make the starter engage the EJ flywheel with the EA trans housing....you could make the rest work.

Been reading a bunch about ej to ea swap but havnt seen any explaination as to why you need to drill the ea flywhell rather than use the ej one thats already there?

It all stems from the fact that the EJ bell housing is 1/2 shorter than the EA flywheel.

The EA input shaft is 1/2 longer and the flywheel will not connect with the starter gears. So physically it could work. with a 1/2 inch spacer/adapter plate. But then you would need to modify the starter to reach 1/2 inch deeper or change the starter ring 1/2 back.

IMO changing things in the outer edge of a rotating item is bad mojo. Centrifical force is the greatest at the edge of the flywheel and it could get scary if things fail.

It's a lot easier to just ream out/ovalize the flywheel bolts and use those. Take about 1 - 2 hours depending on what kind of tools you have and it you have a EJ flywheel/pressure plate to use as a template.

no, that's why the adapter plate is 1/2" thick....

sorry I am an idiot.

I ment to say that the EJ bell housing is shorter than the EA bell housing (not the flywheel)

the 1/2 inch adapter fills that space and also allows for the tranny and engine's different bolt patterns to connect.

that's exactly right....however has no bearing on what flywheel can be used....

looks like I'll have the engine out of my car next weekend (doing a new clutch and replacing my oil pan with the rust holes in it  ). I'll see if I can't get a hold of an EJ clutch kit and see how it all compares with the EA stuff....

I *think* you will find:

The EJ starter won't fit, and the input shafts are different (different clutch disk, center and diameter), so instead of making a bunch of custom pieces you use the flywheel that goes with the transmission/starter, adapting it to fit the engine, as is customary with an swap of this type.

As always a balance between ease, usefulness, and cost.

as I mentioned......the disc itself is interchangeable. you can use a WRX clutch disc on an EA82 flywheel....

the only difference is the teeth where the flywheel meets the starter.....and possibly how the throwout bearing lines up with the pressure plate.

the EJ flywheel is bigger around at the starter teeth and will not fit in the EA tranny , and that causes the starter to not work , trust me if there was an easy way to get the better EJ pressure plate and clutch with the Hi/Lo tranny im there !! if you find something out let us know :)

I have thought of using a 1/2" spacer behind the EJ flywheel with the adapter plate , then remove the starter gear ring from the EJ flywheel and getting it machined down to the size for the EA one but thats more of a pain in the rump roast then im willing to go .

there is actually no difference in the stock pressure plates except for the offset for the stepped flywheel in the push non turbo clutches , its just that you can get stiffer after market pressure plates for the EJ stuff easer center force did make a plate and disc for the EA cars but i think its discontinued . the WRX disc is only about 5mm bigger and all the trannys have the same shaft splines , except for the old 4speeds .

How much problem do people have when using the xt6 plate with their clutches,i dont want more torque if my clutch is going to slip in low range going up a hillclimb.

Anyone have pics of their modified flywheel,i could have sworn there was an extra bolt on the ej not just a different pattern.

problem with the XT6 pressure plate? how do you mean? like not holding the power? my 4-cyl one held the power of the 22e pretty well, but definitely failed before it's time.

same number of bolts...same bolts too.
