not stock roofrack?

Recommended Posts

is there any other roofracks that will fit a loyale besdies the factory ones? im looking for something a little more heavy duty but not the kind that attach to the gutters anyone know of anything?

Short of making your own, there really isn't anything out there. The stock mounting points do not allow for anything more heavy duty than the stock racks. There just isn't the support in the thin sheet metal on the roof to support much weight. Thats why everything is gutter mount.

the light duty part of the rack is the stock mounts. the roof is made of aluminum foil, I've seen those stock rails rip right out of the roof. if you need something more heavy duty than the stock crossbars, get a gutter-mount system.

i have a yakima gutter mount system and its wicked strong. you could darn near lift the car off the ground by the cross bars. way stronger than anything drilled into the sheetmetal, thats for sure.

+1

I use the Thule rack. It has been through 4 subarus, 4 volvos and a few Saabs. It is as awesome as a roof rack can be.

well guess i dont have a choice but the only thing im putting on top is a thule coffin

its not the coffin that makes it a big deal, its the weight of the stuff inside.

I used to have some thule adapters for the stock rack. IIRC, they were actually made for my 2000 explorer. This was a long time ago back in 1999-2000. I gave up on using them when I could watch the roof flex just from having two fairly light bicycles mounted to the roof.

Use the yakima 1A raingutter towers and their roundbars. All modern day yakima and thule stuff is compatible now also so thats a good thing. the yakima will be most likely cheap to get, just go to a bike shop or a ski shop.

I have the same yakima setup. awesome rack, extremely strong. I haul bikes, a spare tire, even hauled a 40ft extension ladder (2 20 ft sections) on it once. bought it used from a member here years ago, and have had it on 3 cars since then!

the whole thing with the Basket and both posts was about $270 something IIRC.... I was going to get all Yakima at first but to get the Basket and both gutter posts it was already $512! That's str8t from Yakima.com and i would still have to go to a bike shop or a truck cap place to get it.

well, i don't think that the original poster was talking about purchasing a basket. just a rack (feet and bars) . in my opinion the yakima mounting system is far superior to the one you showed photos of a while back. not too spendy either, especially if you can find one on craigslist or the bay of E.

Yeah he was just talking about the rack bars, That's right...

Huh yeah Yakima is a great brand and i guess just for the bars thats not to much. the other thing he could try is the Subaru dealer. They have alot of Yakima stuff. But he could also try Ebay too like you said.

What ever he likes, I'm just giving him options.

i wouldn't go to a subaru dealer to buy yakima gear. no way. your rack's only as strong as it's base/mounting area, which is why some of us were steering OP towards the Yakima feet/bars. after that you can add whatever accessories you want.

Yeah that was just an idea to go to the soob dealer because i saw some stuff there, But it would cost wooow alot more!

And the base/feet on the surco bars are really strong!! You can pull on them and the whole car will rock side to side and i was really puling to see how much it can take. And man it's like a rock!:headbang:

All the feet are is a thick braket that slides down into the rain gutter and then another piece of thick aluminum shaped slightly like a L go's over the first peice and then your 1/2" bolt with locking nut hold that on the car!:) Wish i had a way to explain it better. And theres really no one can steal it because where the bolt head is is at a hard to get at. Really a good idea.

but what ever fits your life and what you're happy with is the point.

Heres the best pic i could find of the feet.. Oh and where i have the front one mounted. That's the only place, Because you can't put a raingutter mount over the door windows! Once you open the door, if you can open the door the mount will just fall down. Just a little advice.

just incase someone reads this tread and they won't say "I wonder what that guy was talking about" :)

thats ridiculous. rain gutter mount racks do not rest on the windows. they will not fall off if you open the door as you state.
