GeezerTrainee
I recently acquired a 1984 GL wagon with 4WD and 4 speed manual. I can't find the specifed torque specs for the valve cover bolts. There is no oil leaking now and I don't want to over tighten them after adjusting the valves. Thanks for any help. Durania
I looked at the FSM for the EA81 and it shows 2.2-2.9 ft/lbs. I am hoping I am right. Welcome to the USMB.
beataru
if you use a 1/4" drive ratchet, you shouldnt overtighten it on accident, just remember to start the bolts by hand, people dont realize that even with a little bit of leverage you can screw up threads real quick... GeneralDisorder
VERY light pressure. Even a 1/4" drive ratchet will get them far, far too tight if you just keep turning. It will easily flex the valve cover and ruin the rubber grommets. About 2 or 3 ft/lbs is correct but it's best to use an in/lbs torque wrench and do 24 to 36 in/lbs. Use NEW rubber grommets too. The KID in the above post has never owned an EA81, and knows not what he speaks. GD
GeezerTrainee
Thanks for the info. I owned a 1977 wagon (bought new) which was a lot like the 1984. Wish I hadn't sold it when I left Alaska.

GD Thanks for the compliment...... but whatever, as I also stated above, people dont realize that they can screw up threads with even a little bit of leverage, but I understand I didnt spell it out for you that I generally know what i speak of or else i wouldnt post! Edit: What did I ever do to deserve this kinda crap, all I did was say you dont really need a torque wrench to do this... honestly some people. Yet again you show your ignorance on the subject of EA81's. "Screwing up" the threads is not the problem. The valve covers are thin gauge steel and will flex inward breaking their seal with the head and flattening the gasket. The threads are more than strong enough to severely bend the valve cover. Sugestion - don't comment about models you have no experience with. You are young, and I'm sure you think you know most everything, but you are giving out incorrect and potentially harmful information. Stop while you are ahead. Try this: Admit you were wrong - show people around here you are a big enough man to do that. Just my advice to you. Oh yeah - and compare my post count and join date with your own. GeneralDisorder
All that proves is you have a big mouth and are a "know it all".....NOT! Interesting viewpoint, but actually I contribute a lot of knowledge around here. And I've spent a lot of time helping other members both in person and online. Spent an entire month doing my SPFI conversion page... but of course you wouldn't know anything about that because you haven't contributed anything at all and probably never will. Even with a 1/4" drive ratchet you can over tighten the valve covers and bend them. A torque wrench usually wont go low enough to the specified EA81 torque requirements. I tried once, and it didnt turn out good at all. Now, i use a good coat of gasket sealer on each side of the valve cover gasket and tighten the bolts just enough to hold everything together. After it cures I usually go back and give everything another 1/8th turn to snug things up. -Brian and p.s. General Disorder is a "know it all" Do a search for his posts, and i dont think he's ever had to be corrected in any of his arguments (and there are plenty)

Ginger48
Thats because no one feels like arguing over the internet. Will Rogers once said, "Never argue with a fool because after a while you can't tell which one is the fool. "Crapper (GD) just won't admit he’s wrong or caught or that he really doesn't know what he’s talking about. Instead, he argues and attempts to put others down. I’ve caught him many times spouting ridiculous, absurd “facts”. It’s better to just let it slide. He has many friends that will stick up for him that are as stupid as he is. He thinks he owns this forum.

Who the hell are you again? Smells like a Troll to me.... I’ve caught him many times spouting ridiculous, absurd “facts”. It’s better to just let it slide. He has many friends that will stick up for him that are as stupid as he is. He thinks he owns this forum. Dear Mr. 24 posts, Please provide us with examples. You sir are slandering my good name without so much as a single "fact" which I have provided that is either "ridiculous" or "absurd". Furthermore, I do not require any of my "friends" on this fine and reputable forum to stick up for me. I am quite capable of fighting my own battles for I have clearly fogotten more than you will ever know about Subaru's. In the future, please refrain from talking "smack" in other people's posts when you have no intelligible assistance to provide. This is known as "trolling" and it's been known to get people banned. Interesting that you are a "new user" and yet seem to have more intimate knowledge of this boards members than most..... perhaps you know of this "banning" to which I refer.... dare I say from personal experience? beataru
I am trying to figure out how this is still an arguement, I am trying to let this go, it is absurd to fight over the internet, and why are all the new guys saying what is what? ShawnW
HEY! This is a forum. The point is to gather viewpoints from various people to obtain the answer the original poster requested. You can post what you think it is but there is no need to argue amongst yourselves the way this thread turned out. You may use the quote button but do so only when somebody is completely wrong. If they are partially wrong quote what is partially wrong and say why, in your opinion that it is wrong. I am locking this thread. There are enough answers for the question now. If you have a complaint about another user your options are to first: PM the person you have a problem politely. When they arent civil you can PM a moderator or Administrator. Thank you.
