I bought a car that the HG just went out in and i was going to fix it but ket driving it, i drove it for about 2 months it was just fine until i noticed a rapid loss of power(1st gear up hills at times) and it started to overheat. then decided to pull the motor and swap it with a better one. but i took the heads off and the HG were fine the heads were cracked. You already have a big problem. Just because your temp gauge may be slkow to get hot, the engine internals are far hotter then the water. The compression gasses push the water away from the water jackets. Technically you already have a major problem. nipper Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
idosubaru Posted November 23, 2007 Share Posted November 23, 2007 bad idea to drive it like this if you want to keep this engine block. heat is very bad for all parts of the engine...oil degrades, bearings and well everything is compromised. it's kind of like asking "can i live by eating chocolate only"...probably for awhile but problems will begin to mount and increase exponentially. you definitely see more internal bearing failures/issues with cars that have been previously overheated than not. Owner drove it that way for quite some time, as it had a wash-out in the head where the gasket had blown. Not good........ Had to replace the head. Not advisable to drive it that way. idosubaru Posted November 23, 2007 Share Posted November 23, 2007 oh yeah, that reminds me, i forgot that i had a head off a car that was driven for a while with a bad head gasket. the head was damaged where the leak occurred. there was a divot at that point on the head where part of the metal had melted or worn away. it was repairable if you like welding and machining heads.
