Ea82t problems

Recommended Posts

i just recently swapped a good running ea82t in my gl that had a bad running ea82t. I had to switch intake manifolds from the bad motor to the good one so the wiring harness plugs can connect. As well as put in a new distributor. It took forever to start after we kept messing around with the distributor to get the timing right. We finnaly got it going and it would not idle it did not run good when i drove it it just bogged down. I took it to a subaru mechanic and he took off the radiater cap and it popped off about 2 feet then he called and told me my heads were cracked. This was a great running motor prior to the swap. Do you think it is something with the timing or intake manifold. Are the timing marks on the flywheel the 0 degree mark.

i appreciate any help.

Jason

your distributor and/or timing belts are not lined up properly.

lining up the distributor is a real pain if you're not really familiar with EA82's, the best advice i can suggest is to have someone post a picture of the relation of the distributor to something else....like when the cam is lined up at 12 oclock with the timing mark.

the zero mark on your timing mark is ONLY used for ignition timing with a timing light. it is not used or needed for lining up the timing belts, so for the mechanical timing (timing belts), then no that is not the mark you want.

Maybe this will help check your work

TIMING BELT PROCEDURE-Miles Fox.

You probably know, ea82t's are timed 20'BTDC. So, with the flywheel at 20' btdc, the left (Driver's side) cam mark should be ~30-40 degrees to the right about 2 'o clock. Then put the distributor in with the rotor pointing at the #1 plug I think it's the closest to the brake canister (someone confirm/correct me, it's been a-while).

I never did anything with the timing belts. they should be lined up correctly. So turn the flywheel to 0 and put the distributor in align for number 1 cylinder.

the original intake manifold stayed with the vehicle? your distributor is the issue then.

this being the case we need to know what vehicle this is going in (specifically the ECU and wiring harness which should be orginal to the vehicle right?). and we need to know what distributor you are using. the EA82T distributor's may not be as interchangeable as you would think.

Yes the intake manifold stayed with the vehicle. The motor came from a 1990 loyale and into a 87 gl. Both cars were turbos. I put the distributor on because it was brand new that came out of the bad motor so i just put it on.

okay so this is an 87 GL EA82T.

first thing is to verify the distributor is lined up properly. that's probably all it is.

something i am not sure of but you might want to consider is if the distributor is the right one. there are some wiring differences across 1987 models that gets confusing. not sure if that's XT related only or not, but i think there are other oddities across other models then as well. i know ECU's and wiring are flakey, the distributors may be as well.

distributor alignment pictures were posted in this thread:

problem is it looks like the pictures are not available right now for some reason. not sure what happened, but i posted a message to the original poster of the photos, hopefully he can re-post them for you? this is the easiest way to get them right.

if you swapped the manifolds, check the intake gaskets, it almost sounds like that might be the source of both problems, i speak from expiriance on that one. it sounds like its either hte gaskets (most likely cause) or possibly a bad manifold. in my case, i think i had a crack in the manifold, but i first thought it was the engine, so swapped it for a known good long block, and had the exact same problem. changed the manifold and it cleared up. and from my dealings with the ea82t, you should be able to swap harnesses rather easily, just be careful of the purge solinoids on the left side as they break easily. but the harnesses are interchangable for the most part. rarely you might have to swap a sensor or two.

good luck with that and hope all turns out well. i know how frustrating a poorly running car can be.

cut and pasted into a jpeg from the 89 fragmentary FSM found here:

dizzy_install_EA82.JPG

I thought one would set the flywheel to 20* but I do not understand why A: the book doesnt state that outright in the procedure and B: why the book appears to suggest setting it to 0* on the plate to install it.. I cannot remember right now, does the dizzy rotate a bit as its being inserted or are you supposed to line the mark up to 20*?
