well....that's no fun.

it is a rather in-depth conversion. but certainly not impossible. and if you happen to have a lead on parts (know someone who's parting something out, etc.), it might make a lot more sense to convert it. ANY subaru with a MacPherson rear end will work. but you will need the entire rear suspension/diff/axles/brakes, driveshaft, and tranny.

I could probably get most of the parts from the local UPull yard for less than $200. sure....some assembly required.....but if you're a DIY person, it's not that terribly difficult.

you may want to poke around on more new-gen-based forums like Nasioc or RS25. many people have done this conversion, and you may find more documentation there.

i want to go part shopping with you if you can get all that for less then 200.00. The tranny alone is more then that i would think.

yep, far easier to just buy one with AWD but it certainly is possible. a 95 subaru can be found so cheap it's just not worth all that effort. you could make an a$$load of money in the time it would take to source all of those parts and do the conversion. very high opportunity costs. but it is possible.

I was thinking everything but the tranny.....

but, I do know of a couple yards up here that could possible be talked down that much

I don't know what the local Subaru scene is where you're at. but here in MN....we've got a sweet club, and I know of a few guys that regularly part out entire cars for various reasons (a guy about an hour away from me just bought a turbo'd 2.5RS that had been broadsided from a junkyard.....), and all the parts could pretty easily be sourced from them. they're not exactly high-demand parts.

you might also find somebody parting out an old T-leg for the shortblock.....be creative, keep in mind, the rear end parts are the same for an auto or a manual trans. so you can mix and match.

Around here the transmissions go for about $65 if you pull them yourself. So I'd say about $300 in parts at the U-Pull. Trans, rear diff, rear axles, crossmember, rear hubs, driveshaft and gas tank are the big ones, plus lots of little things. Tank might be hard to come by lots of yards poke a hole in them to drain. In the long run might be easier to find a wrecked car for donor parts.

i really need to let you guys do the shopping for me. Around here a tranny used with a warrenty starts at 400.

there is a difference between pull it yourself yards and off the shelf. with pull it yourself you have to do all the work and you can't "call around" and find out what they have. you have to hope they have what you need. stuff that is common, they'll have it. stuff that is not, hit or miss. so you spend your time searching....going back, and then back or asking friends, and then time removing the parts which are off of cars sitting in the yard likely to have rusted bolts and might have broken parts from the last person that played with it. now...this doesn't happen much, and it's easy to get a great deal from the pull it yourself yards, i've done that before too. but it is a different market.

and sholudn't surprise anyone that NY prices are higher. i picked up a 101,000 mile trans with a warranty a couple weeks ago for $150 and may go get another. quick phone call and a done deal. all that time searching and pulling parts with no warranty isn't worth the opportunity cost for me.

  • 2 weeks later...

your best bet is to find a whole car for parts, say one that has been wrecked, or has quit running and the owner would soon junk it. at least for the major components.

aside from parts sourcing it can be done either way.

i have performed the following swaps:

fwd 5spd to 4wd 5spd

4wd 3at to 2wd 3at(bad diff)

ea81 5mt to ea82 dual range 4wd

3at 4wd ea81 to ea82 5spd dual range(and another between 2 ea82's

part time 4wd to full time 4wd

and finally:

3at fwd to 4wd 5spd dual range (twice)

95 legacy with a 93 transmission
