Has anyone ever bought a fuel pump from Mr Fuel Pump off of ebay for a spfi?

Can anyone tell me how to check the fuel pump I have? I replaced the engine, and before I took the old engine out the fuel pump worked fine. It sat for a year, and I did not start it until I tried with the new engine. It is a gl 1800 Spfi.

Your pump may be gummed up from sitting. Try tapping on it, not "beating" on it, while assistant turns key to "on" a few times. That may free it up. Also, check to see if you have power to the pump, check at it's connector. Should have battery voltage at pump for about 2-3 seconds when key is 1st turned to "on".

My '86 sat for 4 years prior to my buying it, and the fuel pump did the same thing. You have no idea how much crap forms in a gas tank over the years.

 

I wound up removing the tank (not a hard job on a 2WD), & cleaning it out w/ a gallon of carb parts cleaner (the kind you buy in a gallon paint can & has a little metal basket for soaking carb parts).

 

Before removing the tank, I tried removing the pump from the mounting plate & removing the wiring, but leaving the hose connections attached. I applied 12 volts from a jumper box & got it to run. It lasted for 1/2 hour's operation then quit again. That's when I gave up & removed the tak for cleaning.

 

After putting the clean tank back in, I connected the jump box again (directly to the pump) & got halting operation. I checked the fuel filter & found it plugged up. I also tried running the pump backwards a few seconds at a time(reversing the jump box connections) a few times, & that seemed to help.

 

A clean tank & fuel filter seem to be the best antidote to fuel pump trouble.

Thanks for info. I was wondering about the best and easiest way to clean out gas tank. When I went to get carb parts cleaner at the parts store, the parts guy told me to take the tank out and fill it with white vinegar and let sit for a week. After a week take to a car wash and wash it out with high pressure rinse than put back together. which is the best way, or is there a better faster way.

if there is lots of rusty flaky stuff in your tank, you can clean that out by filling the tank with petrol and a couple of handfulls of nuts and bolts, then shake the tank around, not too hard, you don't want to put "inverse" dents in your tank, but enough to knock out all the loose stuff.

 

you can then use certain epoxy resin kits to coat the tank from the inside, in fact, you're then making a new plastic tank inside your old metal tank

 

of course, if you can get a better gastank from the junkyard, by all means, do so, but if you have no choice...
