djbroadus
Drove the 84 GL today, guys got 3 in his yard. Has the 1600 engine brakes felt a little sketchy had to really ream on them. There was a distinct WAH WAH sound from the front end said it was th CV joints and thats pretty common? Interior is in good condition some rust. Can you replace the rear quarter panel by the gas cap? Theres some pretty good rust there. 600 bones not too bad?
TheSubaruJunkie
an 84 GL with a 1600? Doesnt sound likely. Was this a Hatch or a Wagon? -Brian
richierich
Sounds like a little much for a car with Rust in the rear quarters and a 1600 engine. I would think that would be a $300 dollar vehicle. Mechanical stuff can be fixed but body work is expensive and time consuming. Just because stuff is cheap, doesn't mean it is always worth buying. Some of the people on this board forget that, and end up putting hundreds into a car that isn't worth taking to the junkyard.
GeneralDisorder
$600? No way - expensive for a 1600, and I second Junkie - a GL should not have a 1600 in '84 - something fishy there. And yes - CV's are a common problem - but they usually click or vibrate at high speed - doesn't sound like the noise your describing. GD
djbroadus
It is a wagon, has the japanese 1600 ea71. Yes the rust is pretty bad. It has 85k on the engine new tranny and clutch. the sound from the front end is a low lulling sound that increases with speed.
gmcfan
definately not the origional engine, from 1983-86 the 1600 was only offered in the hatchback STD, hatchback DL, 4 door DL, and the hardtop DL. the only time the station wagon had a 1600 in it was from 1976-1980. Before that, it was the 1400 engine that they used, and from '81 up through 1986 they used the 1800.
MilesFox
are you talking about surface rust, or rusting thru.
CIS Subaru
Just a bit of trivia here: The 1600 can also be found is some '86 and '87 2wd GL Hatchbacks in the USA. I've seen two of these cars, and my '85-'89 factory parts manual confirms their existence.
