Need some opinions on this car

Well it is really low miles, and in '89 they had fuel injection. But, it's got the automatic tranny.... so I probably wouldn't pay more than $1500 or so even with the low mileage -- but I'm not counting the rust free as worth much either -- out here, it's not that hard to find lots of rust free cars of that era. In PA, maybe that's worth a $1000 premium.

Well fisst off he's wrong it's not a 89 Loyale, It's a 89 GL.

 

It looks clean one little rust spot is a easy fix, And the Timing belts have been done in 93 at 34K? Why? So I would check/replace those sometime. And she sounds like she never drives on the highway so it's got to have carbon build-up. Other then that it sounds fine. But $2000:eek: Iwould see about gettng him a little lower. $1100-1500 sounds better, Basicly go there see it, feel it, try everything, and good luck.

 

That's all I can say. I'm sure someone else with more ideas will pop up!

All I can say is I paid $1500 for my 90, with 98K on the clock at time of purchase. From the estate of the prior owner - an old man. My car now has 231K miles on it. I have had essentially ZERO major problems. This one looks very good from the pictures. With any "new" used car, there will be anywhere from $500 to $1000 additional bucks you'll want to put into it within the first year, just to get it where you want it to be. Summary: If you like the thought of driving and maintaining a good old Subie, this car has the potential to be a reliable set of wheels for about 8 to 10 more years - but be prepared give it a lot of love (cleaning electrical connections/suspension issues/brakes). Mine is standard tranny, which has been trouble free. The guys with automatics can offer their own opinions. These are fine, simple cars which you can rely on to keep you headed down the road. Just allow about 5 minutes to merge on the interstates.

LOL. I didn't actually think my '89GL was that slow because I'm so used to it... till I took a ride in my friend's new 2.0 turbo saabaru. Holy _____ :eek:

 

I agree that an older subaru, if in good shape, can be a very reliable car... my '89 GL was a two owner car when I got it (compared to the 15 owner car my first subaru was....), and it's still going strong -- better than alot of newer cars my friends own...

ROFL, - you must be one of those guyswho removed the smog equip to get up to speed that fast!

I've still got all that attatched, so my time is a bit slower, i did pick up about 1/10th by removing the spare tire though. Driving my wagon right after driving my g35 is pretty tough at first ;)

way too high. but, you're paying for the mileage, not the vehicle. if you're a mileage buff then you'll have to make that decision. frankly i'm not impressed with low mileage cars, they have more issues, and more "strange" issues in my opinion. but my experience with low mileage vehicles is limited.

 

if it has a 3AT transmission then avoid it unless you like doing transmission swaps. 4EAT is the far better choice if you want an automatic trans. i know some wagons , like the GL-10, and XT, XT6 had the 4EAT. those are not bad...you know, for auto transmissions.

Way too much..plus that rust around the windshield is hiding a possible worse problem...under that windshield is probably a mess..i know this from experience..And its just too much..I paid $600 for my 92 Loyale..5 years ago...from a dealer..The ATs bite also..you can find a better deal much cheaper then that

Tell all of that to misledxcracker.. he has a GL coupe thats right at 100K and its got evil spirits in the distributor cap, or something...

 

The 3AT is a piece of junk. When they are properly cared for (virtually NO automatics really are) they run tolerably well, but quality issues aside...

 

Any engineer who connects a three speed transmission to a four cylinder car is NUTS. I top out first gear at 37 MPH?!!? Pass the Gearing, please!

 

Now, add to this equation the fact that the 3AT in our EA82s is not exactly the Star of the Subaru production line, AND the fact that "most people" probably would care LESS about maintaining the tranny on an old subaru than might be considered "average..." And you wind up saying "fivespeed swap." The good news is that it isn't a very difficult swap if you can get all the parts.

 

As for this:

It recently got new front axles and intake gaskets this year

 

How much do you want to bet that the axles used were not GCKs, and the intake gaskets used were not Ishino?

 

Car aint worth it. Find the $1500 loyale wagon and bid on it, instead, if you need low mileage.

Is it a 4X4? They don't say anywhere in the ad, so I'm assuming not. Definitely too much if it isn't. Probably still too much if it is, due to the automatic.

There's a '93 Loyale wagon for sale here- same rust as this one, 100k, 3AT, for $1800. I drove it, and decided never to buy a car with the 3AT.

Low mileage isn't necessarily good. There will be less wear, but low mileage also means the car sat around a lot so there will usually be problems that pop up once you start driving it every day.
