buzzcon
I can't seem to win, on this problem. This was my original post: "When the turbo kicks in, on my 88, ea82t wagon, it sounds like someone put a playing card on a bicycle wheel. It has kind of gradually came on and gets louder everyday. Any ideas? How bad is this? I would really be happy if someone said "just tighten up that thingamajiggy and it'll be fine" and that was really true." Everyone agreed that it was my turbo. I bought a turbo from a member, but the shaft had too much play in it, so I sent it back. I bought another one from another member and installed it. The noise is STILL there and now it only puts out 5lbs. of boost; the old one put out 7lbs. I don't know where to look. Can a leak in the exhaust manifold make that sort of noise? My car's been down since the 2nd of November. It only sounds like that when it spools up, so it keeps sounding like the turbo. The member I bought the turbo from had it on his car, with no problems, so I doubt that it's bad. Help Thanks ~Myles~
jbecker
When i had this turbo on my car that i sold you it did not have any noise what so ever when it spooled up. I have a car now that sounds like it has the same problems yours is having.
buzzcon
When i had this turbo on my car that i sold you it did not have any noise what so ever when it spooled up. I have a car now that sounds like it has the same problems yours is having. I just took the car out for a ride and when I step on the gas, it seems more like an exhaust leak. The pitch of the sound doesn't change, when the turbo spools up, it just sounds faster, as the engine picks up rpms. It is not the same sound I had with my old turbo; not that metallic sound. I, also, looked at my old turbo and the impeller doesn't spin smoothly, so it was definitely on the way out. I don't know enough about turbos to know why the boost is different between the two. Maybe someone else will share their knowledge on that. If you find out anything let me know, but it's sounding more like an exhaust problem to me. ~Myles~
[HTi]Johnson
Any leak before the turbo, in the exhaust manifold, will make a weird noise, especially a crack in the pipe. The leak will also prevent the turbo from spooling to full boost. How's the catylitic convertor? Not clogged?

subiemech85
IIRC, you should be able to make 15psi of boost!!! connect wastegate to turbo outlet, bypassing all of the computer controlled valves if you can, get ahold of E-85 and see what it does, it may suprise you even with bad gaskets and E-85 I was able to make high boost the diaphram or connecting rod for the wastegate may be different check your gaskets

joostvdw
I think your uppipe/manifold is leaking, either warped at the flanges or a crack somewhere. This wil result in lower boost and lots of strange noises, so check it out.

buzzcon
 On the road again..I just can't wait to get on the road again.. It was leaking at the exhaust manifold. The bolts had worked their way loose. She's running fine. Thanks for the all the help, guys. I really appreciate it. ~Myles~
[HTi]Johnson
That's awesome. Beware that if the downpipe and turbo aren't secured to the tranny/ engine, the up-pipe will break right at the weld under the turbo plate. That's cool it;s on the road again.
