87 xt-gl exhaust

Recommended Posts

Has anyone replaced the stock exhaust system with an aftermarket one?

If so...

-what diameter piping did you use?

-did you keep the resonator and cat?

-is it worth the power/sound advantages?

Turbo or non-turbo?

I have 2.5 inch from the turbo back. No cats, dynomax high flow muffler.

Nice and mellow at idle. At 7200RPMs, it has been described as 'Satan Taking a ************'

Yeah, it sounds that good. Looking forward to putting the 3 inch on.

i put a magnaflow y pipe (has a high flow cat built in), found a bosal brospeed polished flow-thru muffler on ebay n.i.b for $30  and had my favorite exhaust shop weld up a 2.5" straight(ish) pipe from the y to the muffler, no flanges, resonators, nada :headbang:

2things:

1. the sound is freakin awesome, sounds like an sti with an exhaust when you get on it, and really lopes at a stop light (i love it)

2. becuase those old hangers and spring flanges start to sag as they get older, the whole exhaust system is much closer to the underbody now, i'd guess i picked up about 3 inches of clearance at the middle of the car, and no more clunking of the old muffler onto the rear suspension when i go over a bump!! i think that deserves another

  • 2 weeks later...

40 bucks of muffler would keep it quiet.

Im a serious cheapskate and a $40 muffler isnt that bad. Guess you could scavenge one from a junkyard for less though

As for aftermarket exhausts, I like to make my own. Im a Cherry Bomb person myself, I did duals on mine, one off each head, then they come out at an angle under the rear doors. Sounds freakin amazing! I guess it is a bit loud though, when i drive through town at 11 at night, a lot of car alarms seem to go ff when i drive by...

It kinda sounds like it wants to be a racecar

I have a liking of loud cars though, it must be a young kid thing

don't forget to join us at the XT specific forums, you'll love the place...i think:

http://subaruxt.com/forum/index.php

2.5" is too big for a non-turbo EA82 for daily driving, as a matter of fact 2.5" is a little big for an XT6 (6 cylinder - but essentially the same engine). i thikn 2.25" is a better bet on the XT6. depends what kind of driving you're doing but using too big of diameter on a non-turbo EA82 (your XT) makes it a slow poke off the line. it's a very slow car to begin with so i wouldn't worry about speed too much, you'll always be unsatisfied with a non-turbo EA82 if you're worried about "high performance", they are so slow. on my XT6 i've run straight pipe, removed the cat, used high performance cats..etc. my favorite set up for all around driving was leaving the stock converter in place and replace the cat-back with new slightly larger pipe and a dynomax mufflers. the dynomax have a perfect sound for me and a few over at the subaruXT forums have used them and liked them as well, they are not loud but are deep. with that setup i had a couple MPG increase in highway gas mileage too with an automatic. those are great sounding and performing mufflers but not for hte cheapskate in you unless you find a used/cheap one.

Maybe someone can help me with this.

I have no muffler and its alittle loud. Now i tried to see about betting one at teh parts store but im not buying 40 bucks worth of muffler. I guess what would keep it fairly quiet and be cheep enough for me. Just suggestions

Ben

Hmmm... Check your local O'Reilly Auto parts, ask them for a Thrush/Dynomax Mini Turbo muffler (O'Reilly P/N 17702) should run you about $26.00

If that's not your speed then glasspacks (cherry bomb) can be had for around the same price or even a little cheaper.

I've got one of the mini turbos in my garage waiting for me to get a chance to put it on... HOPEFULLY sometime before new years but that's not a certainty!
