captainkf
Hello All! I think I need to replace my heater core as I have flushed the coolant with a hose, chemicals and replaced my thermostat with no help. Even with the engine warmed, I still get mildly luke warm air. So, I think the next step is the heater core, unfortunatly. I am not looking forward to this job. So, does anyone have a good price online for one? Tips or thread links? Thanks all! -Richard
GeneralDisorder
Have you flushed directly through the core disconnecting both lines at the firewall? If not try that with high-pressure water. Flush both ways. Otherwise get a core and go to town - takes about 6 hours. Try rockauto.com, and the online dealerships - subarupartsforyou, etc. GD

Indrid cold
Hello All! I think I need to replace my heater core ..................Tips or thread links? I remember some earlier posts about using a Dremel tool, cutting the side of the plastic heater housing, pulling out the heater core, putting the new in and epoxing the side back on... saving alot of time..... although I have never done it... nore sure if this applied to the ea-82's... so this is the part I say do a search on the subject.... and wish I had solid info... Skip
not to be a dolt here but by chance have you checked to make sure the heater "blend door" is moving through it's full motion? If so please ignor this post and try the core only flush GD has recco'd. The following may be obvious therefore the small font. Since there is no coolant control valve all "mixing" is done via a blend flap/door.
GeneralDisorder
Yes - Skip's sugestion is a good one. Make sure the vacuum servo's are moving the flaps in your ducting. Also there are differences in the core's for EA82's. Later models are not the same as older models in the shape of the brass tubes comming off them in the rear. Make sure you order the correct one. MTSuby
Someone gave me a link when I asked a similar question....but I can't remember what it was! They may have been going out of business..but I got my heater core for $10. Maybe someone remembers what site I'm thinking of...

MTSuby - $10 ? New? Wow! GeneralDisorder - Yes it was flushed both ways, right in front of the firewall. Indrid cold - I remember that being on a gl wagon, not a loyale. I think? Thanks all. -Richard
MTSuby
Yeah, I couldn't believe it either, I had to double check with people to make sure they would trust it. So far so good....I wish I could remember the site..but people were talking about it going out of business, so maybe it's gone now anyways. There was even an entire thread about it. Skip
The Captain asks "How do I check this?" You will have to get under the dash then move the slider lever. The cable's inner wire moves the door. Make sure clips and inner wire are all intact, Once you find the door see if you can push it further than the cable is moving it. I have another comment. My GL turbo had luke warm heat the year I forgot to change the thermostat to the winter version. I ran a 180 deg in the summer and a 193 deg in the winter Doesn't sound like much but sure made a big diff in mine. I say this because I see you changed yours. Maybe they sold you a 180 not the 193? Could be a simple fix??

GD Either core will work, the only difference is the shape of the bends won't fit into the little hold down tangs if you use the wrong one. But it really doesn't matter, the ends of the tubes end up going through the firewall in the same place, and those little tangs don't really do anything but hold a tube that can't go anywhere. MTSuby
Yeah, the core I got was slightly different from the original, scared the heck out of me, but it fit fine. Of course after I was done getting the old one out, things weren't the same in there anyways....got a few more rattles & a little less directed air flow than before my adventure... I couldn't recall if they fit either way or not. I suspect that some trimming might be required if you are going one way, and none is required if you go the other..... but I wanted it to be known.
