Sonicfrog
... pretty bad, out of both tie ends, on Red, the$300 94 Alpine Wagon. I was at the bone-yard today looking for parts for Murhpy, my 87 T-wag, and found one on a 92 that shows not a sign of leaking. How hard is it to replace the rack? I can't find my Chiltons guide so I'm flying blind, but it looks easy enough. Any thoughts?
idosubaru
they are very easy to replace. i think there's 4 bolts for the two brackets and the 2 nuts for the tie rod ends. very simple. i did one this year, didn't take long. you'll want to carefully measure the tie rod end placement...counting rotations if you want to try and do this without getting an alignment...come to think of it, i never did and so far so good. what really determines time and how hard is how rusted they are. tie rod nuts that are rusted can be annoying. i'll get reamed for saying this, but if the rack is that bad you could try a bottle of stop leak for kicks. davebugs
Lucas Power Steering. I'm telling you that I've had tremendous luck particularly with Sub's with it.
Sonicfrog
The leak is pretty bad - I think it's beyond a stop leak. Plus, the rack at the yard looks very clean... and the ball joint have already been removed, so X amount of work has already been done and since I'm kinda lazy..... Sonicfrog
Pulled the rack from the yard. Yep, it's very easy. I hope to install it tomorrow, but I tweaked my back tonight, so we'll see if I'm up to it. Oh, and I didn't tweak my back doing auto repairs. I just twisted around to get out of my seat, and WHAM! Back spaz!!!
idosubaru
if your back hurts, a creeper would be nice to have for this job rather than inchworming your way under the car. lucky westerners with no rust.....parts come right out! that's one of the biggest deterrents of owning older subaru's around here, rust...not even the body/frame kind, just bolts and parts being hard to replace. good luck! Sonicfrog
I have two projects on my plate. Not only am I fixing the rack on Red, but Murphy the $500 87 T-wag blew out the idler gear last week and has to be fixed first.
