rrplacing the coil

Recommended Posts

I was reading the posts on replacing the coil and I've come to the conclusion it may be my "miss" issue on my 87XT. The local Autozone had a coil but when installed it wouldn't even start the car. At the least the old one does that. AND...reading some of the posts it sounds like the Accell has a few problems.

SO

anyone found another "replacement" coil that works?

I've heard of aftermarket coils having issues on these cars. Definitely get an OEM coil, I had gotten one from Advanced Auto that works perfect, stock replacement. Also, when you install the new coil, make sure that the coil bracket is grounded well. Clean everything up real good or it won't spark at all.

????

this 87 XT has probably has a hot wire MAF'd

MPFI system,

so when you changed the coil did

you leave the original bracket and it's ignition amplifier

in place?

The bracket needs grounded to work.

I'd throw my money at NGK plugs and wires.

new OEM is a great idea. if it's price prohibitive then i'd grab a used coil before using an aftermarket, that's how bad they are. you are WAY better off with a used coil for the engine and a spare one in the glove compartment or trunk than an aftermarket...which is in even more need of having a spare!

my daughter works at the local Suby dealer - her cost on a new one is 66 to 120 depending on month of construction
