how do i tell what gen my heads are?

Recommended Posts

there are casting marks on the bottom of the heads...

the casting will read "EA82" either by itself, underlined, or boxed.

GEN 1 - will read "EA82" by itself

GEN 2 - will read "EA82" underlined

GEN 3 - will read "EA82" in a box

on your RX, i remember the turbo side was a gen 3 and the drivers side was a gen 1

EDIT: added the info below...

one thing i forgot to mention was the build quality of the heads...

seems to me the only difference in the 3 of those is more metal in the valve area. this re-inforces in the event of overheating...

in my opinion, if you dont over heat the car the heads will be fine...and honestly i dont think there is a such thing as a "good" EA82T head. they will crack as soon as they get the chance to...once that gasket is gone, it usually means trouble.

yeah i remembered you sayin it had 1 gen1 and 1 gen3.. the ones on ebay are gen1's cause its just plain ea82 on the side of them.. so i'm going to pass..

i'm bettin the drivers side head went.. i was hearing what sounded like piston slap for about a week before it blew, and the sound was comin from that side...

i've found jap pullout motors for $550 (risingsun)

but i'm a bit sceptical on used motors.. and i wouldn't know what gen heads are on it..

i know i don't overheat cars, but like the little bit of reassurance just in case, even tho its not much.

i'll prolly just end up gettin a new one from CCR..

i know i don't overheat cars, but .........

Sorry meeky I just gotta poke a little fun at you..

Didn't your old T-wagon start overheating just before you retired it?

Then the hatch blew a headgasket and hat cooling problems..

Now the RX has become the Hot Mobile..:D

Sorry, no harm intended.. just a little good natured ribbing.

Get yourself a CCR motor, be nice to it and it will outlast you..

heh the wagon had an excuse with 290k original... last big trip it made it sucked 2 gallons of water in 300 miles... but around town it was fine.. it got parked because of the rust on the frame (wouldn't pass inspection) also the radiator plug was snapped off and leaking... but i deffinitely got my use outa it..

the hatch needed an engine cause it had a rod knock.. the only time it got remotely hot was due to a bad thermostat and the 2-3 piece hose job the previous owner did to it to make the legacy radiator work.. headgaskets were fine...

the RX only got hot once (according to the gauge) but after inspection with my bare hand i came to the conclusion it hadn't even got to runnin temp yet.. (bare hand on heads, block, and intake.. no burns, barely warm really) but it was 1/4 gallon low on coolant.. go figure.. then it ran fine for 2 days then poof..

acctually we were on the way home from wal-mart and i got about 5 miles from my house and it started missing... no smoke, steam, fluid goin places, nothing.. i got home found a plug wire popped off.. so i didn't think nothing of it, since it wasn't overheating.. so i worked on the stereo for a couple hours, then started the car and it almost wouldn't start.. almost like it jumped time.. so i finally got it started and saw the green firehose spraying all over the driveway...

hehe, besides a little ribbing is fun don't ya think?
