I assume you are talking about the front one. All you need is a open end wrench 22mm IIRC. You do not need the special O2sensor socket for the front. I changed my front sensor just fine with a open end wrench. Make sure you unplug it first

The replacement 02 sensor will come with antisieze cream on the threads to aid installing, and replacement, if it ever needs to be done.

Be careful not to accidentally smear some of the antisieze cream on the tip of the 02 sensor upon installation, or it will cause a problem.

[...]the oxygen sensor is bad on my 00 OBW 2.5L 5 speed.[...]Any tips on changing it?[...]
Even if anti-sieze was used when the sensor was first installed, the environment it exists in is very harsh; corrosion and carbon buildup are common. If you're lucky, the sensor will come out with reasonable effort. However, I'd suggest being prepared with your favorite rust penetrant. Give the sensor mount a good shot of it, and wait for it to penetrate. If the sensor seems at all reluctant to come out, apply more penetrant and turn it back in a bit before trying to further remove it. You may have to repeat that a few times to minimize the chances of damaging the threads.

As has already been mentioned, use anti-sieze on the new sensor's threads and avoid contaminating its tip.

I just replaced mine. Bought the front o2 sensor from 1stsubaru.com also and they sent me the wrong one

The one they sent me was for the rear- this is easily identified by the plug end. The front and rear sensors have opposite plugs IOW the front sensor has a male plug (female at the harness) the rear plug has female plug (male at the harness) or visa versa. I imagine this is to prevent installing a rear sensor on the front.

When I called them the guy was like, "Uhh, yeah shows you ordered the front, you got the rear, sorry. We dont have any fronts in stock".

Long story short I ended up buying mine from the dealer after all (only about a 30$ difference and in stock 10 min from home).

Make sure it's the right one before you remove the old plug!!!

Also, I found it easiest to access mine from underneath. I also had to squirt some PBlaster and work it loose.

Other wise pretty straight forward. Good luck!
