Joenasnj
1997 Legacy gt sedan.I have to say i do like Subaru's but the 2.5 engine just sucks. I only drive the car a few times a month. Started up the other day and let is warm up and moved it and white smoke out the exhaust. I have less that 200 mile on the replacement. What about replacing it with a JDM motor? I see them all the time on eBay for about a grand. Also what about replacing it with a 2.2 or i have see a twin turbo 2.0. If i can replace it with another motor what years can i use? It sucks cause i have 2200 in it already and I'm not looking forward in dumping in another grand or so. If anyone is interested I will sell it for 2200.00. idosubaru
the Ej25 doesn't typically blow by throwing white exhaust out the tail pipe. did you have any other symptoms? it may have just been condensation in the pipes being blown out? any overheating? if it's not overheating it's probably nothing. if for some odd reason the gaskets are bad...the EJ25 is not to blame. the job wasn't done correctly if they blew in 200 miles, i'd go back to the mechanic that did the job. were the heads milled and what gaskets were used - Subaru or aftermarket? this is one vehicle that should only have Subaru parts for the head gasket. if it comes to it you do not want a used motor...JDM, USDM...anything. either way you're paying a grand for the same basic head gasket issue, bad gamble in my opinion and more importantly, my experience. have it fixed properly or swap to an EJ22. the EJ20 swap is far more work, the EJ22 is a bolt in affair, with no custom work needed, just a couple simple tricks to keep it easy. send me a note - auto/manual, mileage and a picture, basic details if you want to sell it. nipper
Also one other thing. If the engine was cooked repeatedly the first time, a cylinder liner could have worked loose and shifted. In that case the engine is scrap. http://www.aa1car.com/library/gasket_failure.htm nipper
WJM
What gaskets were used? If the engine was overheated severely before the headgaskets were finally replaced then you have a cracked coolant jacket...that will make it seem like the headgaskets are leaking still. Also...if it IS coolant out of the exhaust, then you have other major problems that 99% of the time have NOTHING to do with the headgaskets. Mine has oil smoke on start up all the time...but the rings are going and the cylinders have been cooked from overheating....and one jacket is cracked. I still drive it but I watch the coolant temps carefully and refill the coolant before driving.
Joenasnj
I do not know how many times it was overheated. Any way besides taring the motor apart to tell if it is the liner> thanks Joe Also one other thing. Joenasnj
All Subaru gaskets where used.(FYI Subaru and Felpro are the same told by dealer).I will double check the overheating(shut it down after smoke appeared).one head was fine and the other was milled and new valves installed. the Ej25 doesn't typically blow by throwing white exhaust out the tail pipe. did you have any other symptoms? it may have just been condensation in the pipes being blown out? any overheating? if it's not overheating it's probably nothing. if for some odd reason the gaskets are bad...the EJ25 is not to blame. the job wasn't done correctly if they blew in 200 miles, i'd go back to the mechanic that did the job. were the heads milled and what gaskets were used - Subaru or aftermarket? this is one vehicle that should only have Subaru parts for the head gasket. if it comes to it you do not want a used motor...JDM, USDM...anything. either way you're paying a grand for the same basic head gasket issue, bad gamble in my opinion and more importantly, my experience. have it fixed properly or swap to an EJ22. the EJ20 swap is far more work, the EJ22 is a bolt in affair, with no custom work needed, just a couple simple tricks to keep it easy. send me a note - auto/manual, mileage and a picture, basic details if you want to sell it. nipper
not to my knowledge. You have to take a straight edge and run it over the deck (or what they call a deck) to see if everything is still flat. Are you sure its a HG? Whits smoke in this weather is normal and not a HG issue. I would start with a compression test, both wet and dry. nipper
Joenasnj
I'm going to run it later and check the smoke, but the last time it was really bad. Getting a compression tester from co-worker tomorrow to check that. thanks Joe not to my knowledge. nipper
Normal smoke will disipate. HG smoke will be a heavy thick smog and will hang around. Subarus dont smoke when they blow a HG (even the worst ones). I dont think you have a HG issue. How is your coolant level? nipper
