Wtf....

Recommended Posts

OK, so I call the dealer trying to locate a factory service manual for my car ('89 hatch) and the guy tells me that they didn't make them prior to '91. This has to be BS as I will stake money that the dealer repair techs did not use haynes or some other crap. I assume he means that they are discontinued. Anyone know of a place to get a FSM besides getting lucky on Feebay?

Thanks!

Thanks for the links,

I actually did come across that thread while searching, but the pdf.'s I found are just for the motor, I'm looking for the whole car....

EDIT-

Thanks edrach, I was writing the above response while you were writing yours!

www.books4cars.com

And yes, there is a FSM for '89. I believe it comes in six volumes.

You can also try ebay.

I checked these guys out too and I only see stuff for coupes and 3 doors and from my understanding these are noticeably different than the hatchback. I've been told that searching under the year '84 gets me closer to my car, but none of those books look like the right thing.

any other ideas?

Thanks!

for the record, an 89 hatch, that is actually a "hatch" is not a very common thing. Many many people inadvertently refer to the three door EA82 coupe as a "hatch" and given your late model year, it will be very easy (in the future) for anyone to presume you mean "coupe" instead of "hatch" just because of the 89 model year.

In future posts, if you are having problems, it might be wise to clarify that you do, indeed, have the ea81 powered hatch in some subtle way, and not the EA82.

I make this comment to illustrate exactly why they didnt print FSMs for the varying model years after 84.. they hardly imported any of them. Take care of that 'Roo! :burnout:

You make a good point that I am starting to take a lot more seriously. I've already had a number of bad experiences trying to get parts for it and ending up with the wrong stuff. Luckily for me I have the fine people of this board like yourself and GD to give me such minor seeming but all to important tips, like asking after '84 parts!!

They aren't as rare as all that really. I've seen plenty of 85 to 89 Hatch's and Brat's. They were inexpensive, and as such Subaru actually sold a lot of them.

I have a personal preference for the STD model with the two round headlights, the EA71 and the 4 speed single range 4WD tranny. I've wanted one for a while for a t-case build. Alas they are the hardest to find because they were the easiest to justify throwing away.

I've got a collection of FSMs going too...

Got a complete set for 1986 and 1987 (6 volumes, 4 books each), the 1978 manual, random ones from 1974 and the 1972 FF1s, and soon to have one from 1983!

But of course, I collect them for informational use since I tend to do a lot with Subarus.

Anyways, yes in the FSM, your car is classified as a hatchback and the EA82 coupe is referred to as a 3-door.

Lost, did you pick that one up in PA? I think I posted a link of that one in the for sale section. I never got to look at it, it was like 2.5 hours away from me. If it is the one, what kind of shape is it in? The guy never really elaborated when I talked to him.

Yeah! I got it from a guy in Spring Grove. I'd been wanting one of these for a long time and got lucky this time around. It was a bit of a haul for me too, about 2 hours. But sometimes you just gotta go for it. I know what you mean about the seller, he was a bit lacking in communication. He never really responded to most of my questions. But as long as the car lived up to what he put in the description I was happy. The only thing that didn't is that he said it gets 35mpg. I've been getting 30-31 but I haven't given it a tuneup yet so I'm still hoping....

The condition is pretty good. There are a few rust spots that will need attention. But the underside looks fine. Mechanically it's in pretty good shape aside from all the normal stuff that wears out after 20 years. The Seller said it "may need a new muffler, iginition switch, and clutch adjustment." The muffler was a def. as it had a couple of holes the size of my fist in it. After two wrong mufflers I finally got that sorted. The electrical part of the ignition tumbler was failing, specifically the starting portion. I tried ordering one from the dealer and again got the wrong part (which I couldn't return because it was a special order!!) so I just wired in a momentary contact switch which I mounted in the dash in one of the holes for accessories I don't have. There's nothing wrong with the clutch far as I can tell. He made some comment about the car "always starting, you just sometimes have to push the clutch in real hard" referring to it not starting sometimes so I think he thought there is a clutch kill switch, which there isn't.

Aside from that, the front axles need replacing, after getting the wrong ones (third time!!!!) I posted here and GD set me straight about asking after parts for an '84 and got the correct ones from Napa, but I've been considering taking them back as I've read numerous horror stories about Napa and other discountish axles failing out of the box or quickly there after. Some one suggested GCK axles off Amazon (of which there are tons) but they seems suspiciously priced. Anyone got anything to say on that subject?

Geez, look at me, yak yak yak...

Anyway, plans for the future include rust abatement, a roof rack like MA's which I'll build

http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=83781 (anyone know where to get the mounts?), and the SPFI conversion.

Great board you've got here!

sounds like you have a fun project ahead of you.i am still trying to get my brat on the road, but having built my 86 rxx and started on my brat now, i know how annoying getting parts can be. i was lucky that i got a job with advance auto while i was working on hte rx. do be careful if you go to advance auto, the computers still list the wrong parts for the old school cars. make sure that you look at the pics if they are available.

also, remember to take lots of pics and keep us updated on your progress.

should have skipped the muffler hunting and gone with a universal that would give it a better tone.these cars sound great with a good free flowing muffler.

Sometime in 2005 they dropped the older (1980 to 1990) FSM part number listings from the Dealer Parts Price books.

You can still order the FSMs and MicroFish (sp?) from SUBARU all the way back into the 70's.

I have two older DPPBs.

PM me for the part numbers and pricing.

PS: Any good parts person would have a stack of older DPPBs and would be more than happy to get you the FSMs, OR call the Parts Pic guys to get the numbers.
