Help needed: Window problems

Recommended Posts

Tried searching but didn't have much luck...

When I look at the tonneau cover in the back of my 96 OBW, more often than not there is a water pool on the passenger side, directly beneath the top of the rear window (where the bottom of the trim meets the top of the window).

I guess I should thank the Oregon rain for making me notice this, but it's definitely become worse over the past few months.

I had the trim off, but there wasn't anything noticeable at the window seal.

I would run a hose over the area, but it's damn cold outside, and there isn't easy access to a hose in my complex.

So, question is, do I use a quick fix (silicone sealant? other?), or reseal the entire window (something that intimidates me)?

It seems as though water is only drawn in by pressure changes (opening or closing a door), but I'm not positive.

Sorry for the unknowns, if I get a chance to run a hose on the window I'll update the thread.

Thanks for the help.

So no bites on a leaky window...

how about this one,

My drivers side (and passenger side to a lesser extent) from window rattles pretty loudly when not all the way up or all the way down when going over bumps or rough roads. It's not the felt pads, those are snug against the window. Anyone else have this problem? If so, where is it coming from? I can't seem to track it down very easily.

Thanks for the help, if it's out there...

If your glass is good, call a place that does windshield installs and ask them what they'd charge to re-install your side glass. I wouldn't think it would be too expensive.

As far as a hose--take it to a manual car wash. The high pressure would probably work better for detecting a leak anyway.

The glass appears to be good, the leak is quite small. I'm going to take it to the body shop that fixed ole bloo after a wreck this summer, they might just fix it on the spot since it could have been exacerbated by the accident.

Thanks for the help, by the way.

Anyone have any advice for the window rattles?

  • 3 weeks later...

Quote for repair from a local glass shop -

$55 to diagnose (?!?) even though I know where the leak is...

$95 to remove and replace glass, with no guarantee that I won't have to buy a new window if they break mine.

Would it be a bad idea to put some silicone sealant or some similar type of sealant up where I think the leak is coming from? I can apply a sealant up between the body and window from the inside of the cargo area.

I do not want to pay $150 to seal this thing.

i have a 96 legacy and the only time my drivers side front window seals properly is when i close the door.....ex: if i were to put the window down while driving than put it back up you can def. hear the air and a small bit of seepage coming through ( i think its because our doors dont have a frame around the window)....i have a couple of buddies with subarus and they all have the same problem......i also have the window rattle when i close the door with the window partially down......it doesnt really seem to bother me at all but my guess is something is loose.........just my experience.....

Last time I had my windshield re-replaced, the tech commented about the earlier job where they used silicone and that this was not the proper material and could lead to rusting? Anyway, Permatex makes one specific compound. Google auto glass sealant.

Hell, you might as well break the glass yourself for that money.

Permatex looks like it'll be the way to go. Luckily the water leaking through the window only lands on the cargo tonneau cover, so I don't have any mildew smells *yet*.

Once things dry out around here I'll try out the permatex and see how that works.

Thanks for the advice.
