howdy Jim, nice seeing you around.

With all those codes stored you should have

seen the CEL on, if they were not ghost codes.

Couple thoughts

1)Does the check engine light illuminate

when the key is turned to "on" but the engine is not started?

yes( ) no ( )

2) Has the car ever failed to start since you've owned it?

yes ( ) no ( )

Clear the codes and drive it for several cycles - report

the new codes.

I know you use NGK plugs

Please only use OEM wires

yes and no, the car has 164,000mi on it also, that is what i was thinking [ ghost codes], i have never changed the plugs/wires , things i changed ,fuel filter, pvc, cleaned maf , air filter, but mpg is way down like 14 , yes i have a set of oem plugs / wires ,+ a good coolant temp sensor, . thanks will do ,one other thing, the idle goes up and down ,even after the car is warmed up ?

"the idle goes up and down ,even after the car is warmed up ?"

This could be related to the CTS problem or

an IAC problem - I know you know about them

on EA82 SPFI cars.

EJ's have them also, beside the throttle body pass side.

doubt those would cause hard starting

but

knock sensor is probably the old style prone to cracking and

going bad -- several recent posts on where it is, how much

and how to replace

Baro sensor is located on the pass side inner fender

right beside the pressure exchange solenoid.

Has vacuum lines and an electric line running to it.

Try 1stsubaru.com for a replacement if the code keep coming back.

(my 97 OB has this problem as I type)

Did you do the plugs and wires yet?

They may help with the starting issue esp if it's cold and damp.

the no starting issue is probaby the cam angle sensor. my car does it, and will start if i wiggle it. i have read other posts abouthtis problem. the dealer tells me it was common problem, a newone is about 45 bucks.

speaking of ghost codes, and pertaining to a 2000 mitsu mirage, it had the check engine light and i replaced the plugs and wires. the light is not on anymore, but it pulls a code for #3 misfire.

so, can the codes be cleared with out an obd scanner?

[...]mpg is way down like 14[...]the idle goes up and down ,even after the car is warmed up ?
Poor gas mileage and erratic idle speed (loping idle, if that's what it's doing) point to an overly rich mixture. As Skip mentioned, a CTS problem could cause this; if the ECU thinks the engine hasn't warmed, it will run "open loop" (default rich mixture) all the time. The CTS isn't the only possible cause, but I'd consider it first, given the symptoms.

i've seen bad sensors not throw the check engine light on XT6's. once was the coolant temperature sensor and once was the O2 sensor. both caused drivability issues, the CEL never came on and it worked. not sure why that can happen, but it does. both times the problem was directly fixed by replacing those parts.

pay attention to the CTS - the sensors themselves on the older subaru's never actually fail. the connectors get corroded and dirty preventing a good connection. cleaning is the key. a new sensor often alleviates the problem temporarily because the contacts are clean...but the harness/connector is still dirty so it may come back rather quickly.
