Mikldom
Not me!!!! bought it that way.. I got royally screwed on this deal.. big time.. Oh well, you live and you learn!!! (not screwed on the repair, just the original purchase).. I bought it this way!!!!! ran fine with no problems, and likely dealer did not know, but he is gonna get a demand letter for 1/2 of a head gasket/oil pan repair.. so far he has blew me off with the excuse "My partner's in Mexico" I am gonna write that letter and if no response, give him 10 days before I file formal complaint with the BBB, Independent Dealers Board, and the Attorney Generals office for the District of Columbia (Washington D.C. is where I bought it from and got it 200 miles home, so taking it back was almost not an option).. thanks!!! /mike How did you manage to dent the oil pan? nipper
Mikldom
3 days later on the repair and no problems to speak of. My wife drives about 45 miles each way to work, and most of that is highway miles at 60mph (she does not drive as fast as me I would be at 70).. anyways.. car is driving, acting fine, shift gears fine, temp guage stays at/near half, never above. the 2.5 is a great motor for power vs economy so far, and as I understand it, once you get the HG with the newest generation of HG's installed, and torqued properly, it should be just fine... We love the car, the power and the room... Now, need to get the sirius installed for her and and MP3 deck and the windows tinted.. all in due time. /mike
Bigbusa
I feel that if it costs a grand to fix it, and in that endeavor the timing belts are changed, as well as the water pump I'm glad it worked out! Even though you did end up paying $2000 more for the car than you expected. You now have a suby that'll go another 100k without issue! I'm curious if they replaced the cam and crank seals while they were in there? New belts too? Valve cover gaskets? My father was a VW mechanic for 25+ years at his own shop. He always offered the customers their old parts... if they wanted to see them or take them, that was encouraged. For me, this proves that every part you were charged for can be seen as defective and actually necessary. And, you can then know it was actually replaced. If I was spending $2000 on repairs I would demand all the old parts... the old seals, timing belt, serpentine belts, HGs, water pump etc etc etc. My guess is that the used car sale was as/is and legally the dealer doesn't have to pay anything toward the repairs. Morally, he should at least pay 1/2 if not all. So, be nice to him and see what happens. The problem is... you've already had the repairs done and paid for them. Gardener
Join the club, there are many stories just like yours on this forum. I would be VERY VERY carefull buying any 2.5 with 120K on the motor. It's not if but when will HG blow. Sorry for your pain, its sucks I posted a few months ago with a similar situation on a 98 Outback (except that using a "gutted" thermostat never occured to me). Everything pointed to HG, but the car didn't always overheat, especially for my mechanic so he was loath to do anything. It finally got to the point where it always overheated on the highway and I took it in again. He changed the water pump and it no longer overheats - or at least it hasn't for the week I've had it back. Time will tell. Good luck!
