daeron
..to give me a remote control thingy to lock and unlock my car? The GL-10 already has the fully functioning factory power lock system, so all I would need would be the radio equipment and maybe one solenoid, or some way to tap into the factory signaling.. but, I have never actually played with these types of mechanisms before so I don't really know the specific "want list" of parts, and whether I might be able to JY/scrap them together. The Humble Rustbucket has gotten opened up by strangers and rummaged through, and I have lost my radar detector, my mag-lite, and my CD book to two different individuals because I have left it unlocked at the wrong times... and my key isn't the greatest fit in the driver door, so this is a band-aid I have been considering... any help or thoughts would be appreciated. lostinthe202
Not sure what you'd need. But, if you haven't already, you might want to see what the remotes cost 'cause I believe they are fairly pricey and finding the thing at the JY is pretty remote.... sorry, couldn't resist

Numbchux
you'll need an actuator for the drivers door. there's a guy on ebay selling universal ones for like $10, I just bought one. a simple 2 wire one would be fine. then the remote system itself. which you only need to wire to the one actuator, because locking that door with automatically lock the rest. long story short....not a good thing to be looking for at the junkyard. you can get a decent setup brand new for less than $50. daeron
but all I need is a box with a wire going to the driver door, and a remote to tell that box "lock/unlock" right??? I am wondering how cheaply I may be able to source a replacement remote control. As much as anything else, this is a totally superfluous thing I can't justify spending $50 on right now, and I thought I would keep my eyes peeled... I KNOW I have found vehicles with a spare remote in them in the past. People aren't the most intelligent down here.. nipper
Excpet the drivers door does not have a power lock. It just has the switches that activate the other doors. You need a universal actuator for the drivers door and the transmitter/reciever. nipper

You need a universal actuator for the drivers door and the transmitter/reciever. nipper It seems likely to me, given Subaru's tendency to have parts as univeral as possible, that there are mounting points for an actuator even in the driver's door. After all, the cars were available in right hand drive versions, so in those cars it would have been a passenger door and had an actuator. It also seems likely to me that an actuator from somewhere else on an EA82 would bolt right into that spot. If you do go looking for parts, that would be a good place to start. But then, you don't have any more Subes in the junkyards down there than we do here, do you?
Numbchux
It also seems likely to me that an actuator from somewhere else on an EA82 would bolt right into that spot. I've looked into this. I've got all 4 doors from my '85, and I've tried mounting any of the other 3 in the drivers door, with no luck. some modification would be necessary. I've also looked into trying to get an actuator from a RHD model, but also with no luck (been watching foreign ebays for parts). seems to me it'd be much easier to do this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Brand-New-Universal-Power-Door-Lock-Actuator_W0QQitemZ110213602398QQihZ001QQcategoryZ33696QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem $15 for a universal actuator with hardware as for the wiring, for the absolute simplest system, you're looking at at least 4 wires. power and ground for the unit, and 2 to the actuator (have to reverse polarity for unlock). although most systems will require an antennae to be mounted in the window somewhere, and have wires for all 4 doors, something to flash the parking lights, etc. etc. probably possible to pull something from a yard, but a total PITA, with no guarantee that it'll work, and it'll probably be more than a little difficult to find diagrams for it. or you could do this, and then throw the second actuator back on ebay and make a bit of your money back: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/KEYLESS-ENTRY-UNIVERSAL-2-DOOR-POWER-LOCK-KIT_W0QQitemZ290197096378QQihZ019QQcategoryZ33723QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
daeron
bah, I thought it was probably useless. I wish I had thought of this before christmas, this would have been a perfect gift to ask for. I guess I had to talk it out to realize how pointless it is to wish I could put the junkyards to work for me on this one.
ausubaru92
Ive done it! I got an articulator from another car (l series) and modified it to fit in the drivers door, wasnt hard and then bought the remote controller off ebay. There are about 4 ways to wire the controller, subaru uses the reverse polarity way. (ie. the polarity reverses for lock/unlock) You only need 2 of the 4 wires goin to the drivers door, the ones that go to the other doors. ignore the + and - wires in the drivers door. Mount the controller under the steering colum and tap into the wires behind the kick panel Good luck
