Brat Questions????

Recommended Posts

I am picking up a brat tomorrow. It is quite stripped inside. The outside is all there and straight. The only thing I need for the exterior is Both front fenders and a rear bumper, but ill build that.

He had told me that there were rats inside at one point but damn, theres no interior. Which brings me to the questions.

What on a brat and ea 81 subs are interchangable, as far as interior goes.

Things I know I will need.

-Both front fenders

-Ignition and key

-Both front seats

-Lower dash panels

-Steering column plastic

-Guage cluster

If anyone has any of these parts please let me know.

Thanks guys.

Jess

Things I know I will need.

-Both front fenders - common to all EA81s (BRATs, wagons, sedans, coupes, hatches)

-Ignition and key - ditto. A lot of ignition barrels are worn out...

-Both front seats - common to all EA81's. Some models have lumbar support (not sure if this applies to LHD or not, I know our sedans have lumbar for the driver but not passenger).

-Lower dash panels - common to all EA81s - not sure if common across coupe dash and BRAT dash (again, might be US-specific).

-Steering column plastic - as above

-Guage cluster - depends on dash type

seats, dash all dash panels and consoles for shifters and change are all that will fit from other cars.

anything associated with the doors will need to be from a gen 2 brat or hatch.

back wall and roof are strictly brat items.

remember, gen 2 brats went from 81 to 87 in the states.so do not get your confusion on if it is an 86 or 87.still ea81 oriented.

Ok so im picking it up for $150. I think its an 85

I will need all these parts at somepoint. There is little body work to be done but I will do the rest before I put it back togeather. Really? alot of work? Seems like a little, but not too much. I have a problem w/ completely redoing all my cars. I was thinking the problem would be availablity. Now I need to find em in junkyards that havent been scrapped?

Oh He was going to sell it to someone else and that guy came and pulled some stuff off like the ignition but never came to get the car. I wish I had one even worn out.

Ok so I got it today. Got it down to my shop. Its only got 90k and im the 3rd owner but its a little more of a heap then I thought. :-\ Its a late model 84 if not 85.

The bad.

WHO LET THE RATS IN! Somehow they got in and lived in the dash. YUK The p/o pulled out of the interior and dash. I dont know what goes where? Im going to a junk yard very soon to pull every thing from the steering wheel to the firewall..... So EVERYTHING is EXACTLY the same right? I dont know what type of guage cluster it is as it has no clear plastic or face on it? I think its the round guage ones? If thats one? Anything special I should be looking for?

As a bonus. My boss is only giving me 30 days to get this thing out of the shop. I dont want to trailer another car to my house plus I cant have anymore "non running" cars there either  So Ive decided to make it drive home! It really all depends on how this eng runs($750 crate eng  ). He said it ticked pretty bad and needed carb work (obviously). When I crawled under it. It leaks pretty bad, so regardless a full gasket kit is in order. Is there any one oem carb that is better than the other, while im in the junkyard?

The one thing I need is an ignition, drivers door and pass door locks and key.. I dont have any key, keys or anything for locking.. At all? GRRRRR 1st car ive ever bought where the guy has a title and no friggin key. Oh after all this. The price came down to $100. And being the 3rd owner the cars never been "gifted". So my bill of sale is "given to for parts"

Thanks for all the help.

Jess

Major differences are between GL and DL, not between the different body styles. DL/STD are a lot different in the dash and steering column so you are going to want to stick with GL parts if you have a GL, or DL if the Brat's got no t-tops (if it's an auto, then things get messy).

The doors (and thus the door panels) are coupe/Brat/Hatch. Wagon and Sedan doors are shorter.

Everything behind the seats is Brat specific.

The A-Pillar molding on the passenger side is specific to Brats, as is the Oh-Poop "strap" and it's hook.

Everything skyward of the windsheild is Brat specific - especially the GL's with the Halo-Twin roof.

Consoles and shifter boots, etc have to come from a 4WD to fit properly. The tranmission tunnel sheet metal is physically different and the hole is in a different spot vs. 2WD's.

That's about the size of it..... I can't think of anything else that's different off the top of my head. Door glass is Brat specific as well but you didn't mention needing that.

There's a lot of outside stuff (mostly past the doors toward the back end) that is different too, but you didn't mention that either.

When you get fenders be sure they are 83 or newer. 82's have the wrong sided antenna, and 80/81 are different in the headlight surround area as well as haveing the wrong sided antenna.

Jess, plan on spending a Saturday and Sunday at the Lynnwood Pull a Part yard. There's a green '83 wagon and a red '87 Hatch that would likely have most of the parts you need or want. Not sure what part of the Sticks you live in, but there are many who could help you with advice or info: Baccaruda and Monstaru in Spokane; bratsrus1 in Selah; Zap and I near Seattle....just to mention a few.....I know there are more.

You have a pull a part yard in Olympia out by the airport. Also another in Tacoma near the Steele St. exit off SR512. Tacoma and Lynnwood are open 9am to 5pm, 7 days a week. Not sure about the Olympia yard.
