HIDs anyone?

Recommended Posts

From the DS Virrdog link

Some "HID kit" marketeers will try to tell you that the kits are technically illegal only because the US headlamp laws are stuck in the past. That's wrong; the world's experts and regulators all say the same thing: Don't!

from the Habor Freight manual:

Prior to use, make sure to check with your local DMV

(Department of Motor Vehicles)

for any rules and regulations

regarding the use of HID lights.

I wonder how many people do this?

It was aimed at getting them to read it.

Sorry if it offended some.

After reading it and the other links,

I wiil not be thinking

about a set until new units

come out with the

proper refectors and lens.

Virrdog, that is an excellent link!

Too bad these "kit guys" will not

take the time to read it.

Actually Skip, I've taken the time to read it... Long before it was posted here. But thanks for that, bud.

Also, keep in mind that NOBODY here has disagreed with any of the reasons NOT to do this. WE all know in doing this we take on certain risks. The same risks we take when we lift our vehicles (illegally), modify our exhausts (illegally), etc...

Ever see those lifted to hell dodges, chevy's, fords, etc... that haven't reaimed their headlights? Always shooting right into your eyes when you drive by them. Got that in your mind? Can you picture it? OK, now reduce the glare by 75%. Thats about the same impact our "HID KITS" have on oncomming drivers. Its actually LESS than driving by someone that left their Hi beams on.

So, basically all I'm saying is we've weighed the consequences, and decided to take the risk.

Keep in mind, that it would be an entirely different subject if we were taking about "aftermarket" RHD lamps and such. I think people tend to get these confused.

i think i am going to get one of these kits out of spite now. and that article, while having some good points makes the writer sound like they are only whining cause they missed out on something. like the kid that never was allowed to ride go-karts so any time the subject comes up his response would be "those are stupid".

ive been in cars that have been retrofitted, the visability was fine and the lights didnt blind oncoming traffic. if set up properly, they are fine.

yeah, the author of that artile seems a bit full of themself. kinda like the whole "im better than you" thing going on there.

That's kewl Tex

You and CF were not the "kit kids"

I was referring to - sorry you took offense.

The ones I am talking to are the ones I see around here.

They do not take the time to adjust them, get the proper

set up ect.

They throw them in because they have

the more money

than brains syndrome

and

wanna look cool

We drive dark country roads and these

(along with the trucks you mention)

are a danger to us old farts.

Our eyes do not readjust to the dark as fast

as they once did.

Once again, sorry you took offense bud,

it was not aimed at you.

subarutex,

do you have any pics of your set ups? how bad was the wiring for your rx?

also, for anyone with an older suby, like say, a brat, have you found any light fixtures that allow interchangeable bulbs? i really want to get hid in my brat when i get it on the road.

These guys have both headlight sizes and with full replacement reflectors and lenses.

Problem solved.

I run then in my Cibie oscars...amazing light output.

I will try to not resort to calling names, but you have not provided any proof of smart thinking in this post.

Regardless of how you like the guy who wrote the article, did you check out the actual tests that are conducted on the "kits"? The spread and pattern of the light output was not conducive to the human eye seeing well at night. Doesn't matter how uppity the person or yourself maybe, the eye is still human. And check out what a kit did to E-code lights, it took some of the best looking optics and even made it's sharp cut off all blurry and crappy looking. It throws light in the wrong places. Glaring other people is just one of the side effects. Having too much light in the wrong places can be just as bad as not enough light.

And I'm sorry, personal subjective observations of how good/bad the light may be is worth the paper its written on. Lighting patterns have been studied for about a century now and they have figured out works. Advanced machines can let you know if the lighting pattern and brightness of a bulb/housing combination is within range for a human seeing well at night. To ignore all that is well, silly.

But if someone wants to put these on their car purely for looks, knowing that they can't see as far, might be blinding others, among other things... more power to them.
