Good Day in Junkyard! LSD -WHOOT-

Recommended Posts

I had a great day today in a few different yards. I got everything I need for the interior of my brat. Will have keys tomorrow! And I finally found an lsd! It took a few months and looking under alot of subies. Here she is in all her $26 glory

Couldnt resist, so I headed out to my shop to put it in and make my diff breather.

For the diff breather. I drilled a hold in the floor under the rear seats and ran it through the floor/grommet (w/ sillycone) up the rear pillar to about head height.

$26 is awesome, very lucky. What does the breather do?

It keeps water from going into the already existing vent. The vent allows the diff itself to expand and contract without pressurizing the air inside causing the seals to push out and cause leaking. The breather acts sort of like a snorkle.

Yes they are right about the breather.

Yes I took off the bar for clearity and the bar kind of wraps around the top of the diff and had to be knotched to fit the extended breather. I was going to make a quicky mustashe bar but it was already like 2am and I just wanted to test the lsd today when I go out mud'in.

I just had matching single range trans w/ 3.9 open diff. I just did a d/r swap and it changed my gear ratio and had to find a 3.7 to correct it. AND I found one -WHOOT-

It came out of an 86 turbo coupe.

Yes it will fit your 85

EDIT. Being that the mustashe bar wraps around the top Of the diff. I could never see the diff breather. I thought It a pressure style breather that only open when was hot and under pressure, relieved the pressure then closed. But its cheap plastic and was stuck in the open position. You could swap it out to a metal one and relocate it a little heigher if you dont ford water and it would function better. But if you ford water and dont like always changing your diff fluid or worse off pressing bearings, setting pinion spacing and backlash. A diff breather is the only way to go.

I will be on the hunt for these till theres no more I can pull. If I find any, I always have tools to pull it and ill mail them out to whom ever.

Going to test it out in a few hrs!!!!!

<---------Happy as a clam!

I'm glad with your success; which PAP yard did you find it in? At that price, it's likely Lynnwood or Tacoma; I know Oly charges more.

I'm glad the 3.7 worked for you, but it would have been easier to drop the LSD kernal into an open 3.9 diff. I'm pretty sure there's a write up somewhere on the board for that.

I like your snorkle idea. The plastic breather does the same but they usually clog with age. With the hose you won't need to worry about any really deep puddles.

I just took the whole diff assembly and dropped it in? Why swap cassings.

It came from tacoma pap.

I go threw water atleast halfway up my door almost everytime I go out. Which is often cuz I can wheel thousands of acres 5mins from my house

Thank god for good door seals! But need a good turbo snorkle set up :headbang:

Are you sure the front diff is a 3.700? I thought all the d/r front diffs were 3.900.

Moving the kernel wasn't to swap the casings; it was to move the kernel into a 3.900 rear diff to match the front diff. Anyway, looks like you have it under control.

Is any of that thousands of acres flat, cleared and moderately dry and accessible to street legal vehicles? PRG is looking for a flat field around Olympia to set up a rally cross venue.

No its not flat, its great for rally though! You would have to contact ft lewis though..... doubt they would let you rally there.
We were thinking of Ft. Lewis but would need an inside contact as well as lots of luck bringing a number of cars onto the base. It would be nice entertainment for some of the troops there if it could be done.

Better check and make sure that Transmission has really got a 3.7 Front Diff, or else your going to destroy a perfectly good $26 LSD, or a much more expensive transmission.

I dont want to sound rude, but are you even reading any of this thread before posting, You can easily find this answear by just reading what I wrote in one of my first posts?

Plus it is a Turbo so you know it's got 3.7. I guess he didn't say he was using a turbo D/R (from an rx, must be) but that would still be 3.7

Nice car. How much trimming is done behind those fender flares? How did you do those?

EDIT:

HMM... I just re-red this. Slideshow, are you sure that you do not have you're specs reversed? I know from you're other posts, you're car is a Turbo GL-10. It's original S/R trans would have been 3.7, not 3.9. And Unless you're D/R box is a "fulltime w/diff lock" from an RX, it will be a 3.9. Please don't take offense, but this is something to be VERY sure you have right before running.

Excactly what car is you're current (D/R) transmission from?

Did you have to change front axles to use the D/R? Did it have 23 or 25 spline stubs?

Yes, if its a dual range, then it could be on of two 3.7 final drive trannys. First one being the '85 '86 which is part time 4wd dual range, came in the RX sedans and some GL-10 turbo sedans depending on the options. Second 3.7 tranny is the known RX gearbox which is the full time version with the locking center diff, blah blah blah. If its neither of these two trannys then its a 3.9 final and you'll toast either it or the rear LSD if they're not geared together.

Ok so I was at a junkyard all day and couldnt get back to you guys on this.

Ok my GL-10's rearend was a 3.9 when I bought the car. I bought a trans from a place that delivered it to my work. They claimed it came from a turbo car? I had the d/r trans in the car before I realized there was a difference in spline count. I had 2 new axles delivered to my shop in 20mins and dropped in the new 23 spline count and finished the swap. When I was test driving it and checking all the shift linkage and making sure it shifted smoothly between 2wd, 4wd-hi and 4wd-low, there was alot of binding. Not binding during shifting but when driving and or turning. I dont really know how to explain it. It would act like the rear end was welded up. chirping the inside tire and binding badly up front. I took it out on the main road and tried to drive it in 4hi. I coulndt go over 35-38mph. I was blown away that I couldnt drive it on the pavement at all. With my old single range set up, I had no issues driving on pavemnet up to 80mph. When I test drove it off road, it seems just fine on gravel, dirt, sand ect.

My roommate works at a transmission/rearend shop and he went to work to ask some questions for me. He told me that what must be happening is my front diff and rear end are 2 diff gear ratios. Being theres 2 diff gear ratios and currently having a 3.9 rear diff. My logical option is to swap to a 3.7. I havnet driven the car in 4wd since I put in the 3.7 lsd. So I dont know if it changed anything.

I just dont know what spline count each gear ratio is. Were 25 spline counts only used in turbo cars? Were 3.7 gear ratios only used in Turbo cars?

Basically, is there a possibility that I have a 23 spline 3.7 or were they never even made?

Well I heard from a friend that he read the post today and I need to read it. He explained it to me a little and I just went ahead and pulled a 25 spline count, turbo, d/r trans out of an rx coupe. It was the car I pulled the lsd out of so I know its the correct one. BUT what gear ratio is the d/r thats in my car now? Will it only mess up the diff if it is driven on pavement? or only offroad?

That being said im going outside to actually test my new lsd. If I have issues or you guys say otherwise Ill drop in this new trans. Either way no big deal, no harm done.

Thanks

Jess

I did read your posts. However, unless you have a RX trans, your trans is most likely NOT a 3.7

Just a word of caution.
